Appropriate way of writing verse 204?

Post by FTCDean » Thu Aug 22, 2019 3:24 pm

Ārogyaparamā lābhā,
santuṭṭhiparamaṃ dhanaṃ.
Vissāsaparamā ñāti,
nibbānaṃ paramaṃ sukhaṃ.

I've seen slight variations and simply want to ensure that I have the "correct" / most appropriate way of writing verse 204 in Pali.

All help is very greatly appreciated.

See this link: https://tipitaka.org/romn/cscd/s0502m.mul14.xml
[edit: the link lists the Burmese version as well as variants]

The default on this page is the Burmese version, I think.

Text in [Blue color fonts] indicates a foot note.

The following abbreviations are used to refer to different versions of the Tipitaka:
sī. = Sri Lankan
syā. = Thai
pī. = Pali Text Society
ka. = Cambodian

All versions are fine. Just choose one and stick to it, i.e. don't choose one line from let's say Burmese edition and another from the Thai. The version you quoted in the opening post is okay.

There are a number of variants readings in the different editions of the Pāli text. Yours is the Burmese edition. The differences are usually minor.

Among the several variant readings, the one you give in your post has been favoured by most modern Dhammapada editors, on the grounds of its conformity to pathyā siloka, the Dhammapada's dominant metre.
“Keep to your own pastures, bhikkhus, walk in the haunts where your fathers roamed.
If ye thus walk in them, Māra will find no lodgement, Māra will find no foothold.”
— Cakkavattisīhanāda Sutta

This is the variant I've been reciting for a long time - the metre rolls off the tongue very nicely. This is one of my favourite Pali verses - much depth in the meaning and pertinent for personal practice.
