In short,
I would say Arammana is the object in your mind at a given time.
Nimitta is the subsequent image appears afterword.
For instance, say I am eating a mango now. Then Mango is the Arammana in my mind
Then tomorrow I get the Nimitta (sign) of the mango and looking for a mango to eat.

However, Nimitta is used in various context.

Since the topic is in Pali sub forum, I'm a bit confused what kind of comparison is desired

Please compare and contrast Nimitta and Ārammaṇa.
Posting some relevant verse from the suttas would be helpful.

a famous article you probably know, that in my opinion states Nimitta is not the sign of object but sign of factors http://leighb.com/case_of_the_missing_simile.htm
