Hi,

If you click on the upper left corner of Suttacentral window, you can find a link to translation:

Yes, that site's translations can be questionable.

Ven. Bodhi's translation of the AN can be had new for ~$60, and his translations are far clearer. Or just wait until Ven. Sujato has finished translating the AN and releases it for free on suttacentral.org, probably a year or so out from release.

Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation:

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Because of the emphasis on faith, I think this refers to stream-entry.

why would a monk charge money for translating suttas

Hi Sovatthika,

My recollection is that Bhikkhu Bodhi donates any royalties to charity. In any case, the majority of the retail price of books does not go to the authors.

You might like to read this thread:
Why isn't the Visuddhimagga free?
which discusses some of the issues.

Towards the end of that thread, after a gap of a few years, you'll see that the new BPS version was released as a book for purchase and a downloadable PDF. It would, of course, be nice if that happened with more books.

The Visuddhimagga is distributed for free—but the printed version still costs something, due to production costs (giving the printed books for free would surely make the publishers go bankrupt in a very short amount of time).

While Bhikkhu Bodhi is the author/translator, I am 100% certain he doesn't get a salary (since he can't even touch money). It is possibly Wisdom Publications which accepts and redistributes the funds, or another organization.

Regarding charging money for the Suttas, printing and distribution does cost money. Wisdom Publications also do need to cover their expenses and pay their employees (who aren't monastics and have to pay for food, housing and other basic necessities).

Katamehi chahi? Buddhe aveccappasādena, dhamme aveccappasādena, saṃghe aveccappasādena, ariyena sīlena, ariyena ñāṇena, ariyāya vimuttiyā. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, chahi dhammehi samannāgato sāraggo upāsako tathāgate niṭṭhaṅgato amataddaso amataṃ sacchikatvā iriyatī”ti.
How about 6 elements?

3. (Perfect) trusting without doubt in saṅghā. (Vicikiccha-sanyojana cessation)
4. Ariya's sīla (noble one's morality). (Silabbataparamasa-sanyojana cessation)
5. Ariya's ñāṇa (noble one's understanding). (Sakkayaditthi-sanyojana cessation;magga-ñāṇa)
