The Buddha on Precepts

Post by R1111 = rightviewftw »

Did The Buddha refer to what we call precepts as something that breaks or can be broken?
Breaks or broken as in opposite pali word of the unbroken in this context
“He possesses the virtues dear to the noble ones—unbroken, untorn, unblemished, unmottled, freeing, praised by the wise, ungrasped, leading to concentration.

In Pali this sounds as:
Ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato hoti akhaṇḍehi acchiddehi asabalehi akammāsehi bhujissehi viññuppasatthehi aparāmaṭṭhehi samādhisaṃvattanikehi.
The opposite word is used in Katthi sutta:
‘dīgharattaṃ kho ayamāyasmā khaṇḍakārī chiddakārī sabalakārī kammāsakārī na santatakārī na santatavutti sīlesu.

Since long the venerable one has been inconsistent in his virtues, with broken, fissured and spotted virtues.

In Cariyapitaka "fear of breaking virtues (precepts)" is mentioned:
KN Cp, 2. hatthināgavaggo, 1. mātuposakacariyā, para. 30 ⇒

neva tesaṃ pakuppeyyaṃ, sīlakhaṇḍabhayā mamā”ti.

KN Cp, 2. hatthināgavaggo, 2. bhūridattacariyā, para. 18 ⇒

ālampāyane na kuppāmi, sīlakhaṇḍabhayā mama.

KN Cp, 2. hatthināgavaggo, 9. alīnasattucariyā, para. 26 ⇒

“sīlakhaṇḍabhayā mayhaṃ, tassa dessaṃ na byāhariṃ.
