Are these monks chanting a slightly different version of dhammacakkappavattana sutta?

Post by manas »

If you listen closely to the following, the monks' chanting appears to diverge from the text I obtained of the dhammacakkappavattana sutta from ati. It seems mostly in concordance, but appears to diverge somewhat at this place:
"Now this, monks, is the noble truth of stress:[1] Birth is stressful, aging is stressful, death is stressful; sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair are stressful; association with the unbeloved is stressful, separation from the loved is stressful, not getting what is wanted is stressful. In short, the five clinging-aggregates are stressful.

Idaṃ kho pana bhikkhave, dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ: jātipi dukkhā jarāpi dukkhā vyādhipi dukkho maraṇampi dukkhaṃ appiyehi sampayogo dukkho piyehi vippayogo dukkho yampicchaṃ na labhati tampi dukkhaṃ saṅkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā".

I wish to learn this particular chanting style (to be able to chant this sutta), just want to know where I can get the exact version they are chanting (and more to the point, some assurance their version is as legitimate as any other approved version?)

Any help on clearing this up would be much appreciated

The version chanted by the Abhayagiri monks has the same differences compared to the CSCD text. I would suggest learning the version that you're most likely to use.

However, see this earlier thread.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention Bhante. I will be interested to hear which version Dhammaruwan chanted (the link on the topic page is inactive, but I will keep searching for his version).

I have updated my Exposition of the Dhammacakka Sutta page with a link to a smaller version of this MP3 file.

Dhammaruwan ordained last year with his long time teacher, Venerable Henapola Gunaratna.
