Diacritics input tools

Post by Assaji »

Hello Pali friends,

Several ways to input diacritics have been described in the thread
http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=25685
Bhikkhu Pesala wrote:Windows users who are into Buddhism can install a keyboard for typing Pāḷi with diacritical marks. It is so much quicker than cherry picking from a tooblar, though I am sure that that could be done somehow, and would work on most platforms.

Keystrokes

All the Pali and Sanskrit diacritics are produced with the option key:

opt a: ā
opt i: ī
opt u: ū
opt g or k: ṅ
opt c or j: ñ
opt t: ṭ
opt d: ḍ
opt n: ṇ
opt m: ṃ
opt l: ḷ
opt r: ṛ
opt s: ś
opt x: ṣ
opt h: ḥ

The one that is needed can be accessed by opening Finder, clicking 'Go' in the menu bar, 'Computer', 'Macintosh HD' (or whatever your hard drive is called), 'Library' and then 'Keyboard Layout'. Also follow the missing instructions on the VRI website.
samseva wrote:Finally, the best way on OS X (but slightly more complex) is to modify the press-and-hold feature. It's a bit more complicated, but very much worth it.

Follow the instructions from the following link (second answer starting with "In addition to simply...").

If anyone has some difficulties trying to modify this, send me a PM.

For Linux I would recommend IBUS:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ibus

where Velthuis system is used, with the exception of upper dot: "ṅ" - ";n"

For Linux there's also a custom Pāli Linux keyboard layout: https://github.com/tuvok/pali

For Android there's an app:

One more option is an online keyboard:

Thanks Dmytro,

For Linux systems one can also simply make use of the compose key.

Here are the instructions for setting this up on the Gnome desktop.
https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help ... en#compose
Other desktops have the same functionality, but slighty different ways of activating it.

Wincompose implements the same thing on Windows, though it's not perfect yet:
https://github.com/samhocevar/wincompose

This method is not Pali specific, and is useful in any case where you need to add macrons and accents.

Download Bhasha IME for Windows Systems from https://sites.google.com/site/bhashaime/

It's freeware and supports most Indic scripts, including IAST (i.e. the default method of Sanskrit & Pāli romanization).

Just extract the zip to a folder and double click the exe file and it's icon becomes available in the taskbar near the date area. Right click it and set it to IAST. That's it, you are good to go, use the shift for the diacritics (shift+a will give ā, shift+c or shift+j will give its corresponding nasal i.e. ñ)
