Luang Pa Liem on anger

Post by TLCD96 » Wed Aug 14, 2019 11:24 pm

Ajahn Sek (a Thai monk from WPP currently staying at Abhayagiri in California) recently shared a story for reflection; here it is from memory:

Luang Pa Liem was walking around the monastery with Aj. Sek as his attendant when they came across an outhouse on the path. LPL went inside, presumably to use the restroom.

After waiting a considerable time, Aj. Sek decided to check in on him, and found that he had actually been cleaning the outhouse because it was covered in filth. Aj. Sek felt disgusted that LPL was cleaning up somebody else's mess like that, and was angry throughout the day.

Later, at tea time or a talk, with Aj. Sek still angry, LPL reflected on the generosity of the lay supporters of the monastery. He reflected that the monastery's beautiful trees, and thus the monastery's pleasant conditions for practice, were made possible by using human feces as a fertilizer. So he said, in Thai:

Shit is useful, anger is useless.

____

The original Thai is a play on words, lost in english: ขี้คนมีประโยชน์ ขี้โกรธไร้ประโยชน์
All of us are bound by birth, aging, and death.

Great story :) thanks for sharing. I've heard some great stories from visiting monks at Abhayagiri.
