Find a Sutta

Post by greenjuice » Wed Oct 16, 2019 11:32 am

Don't know where to post this, a quick question about finding a Sutta, i vaguely remember a Sutta where the Buddha talks about the three unwholesome roots, and then about the four brahmaviharas, and i can't find it. Could someone help?

While not explicitly referring to "roots" ("mula"), possibly MN 43.
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

These are pretty popular topics and searching key words on suttacentral or accesstoinsight should return lots of results. Ex:
AN 3.69 wrote:Monks, there are these three roots of what is unskillful. Which three? Greed is a root of what is unskillful, aversion is a root of what is unskillful, delusion is a root of what is unskillful.
And more on the unwholesome roots and the brahmaviharas

The Kālāma Sutta is the one that comes immediately to mind.

Bhikkhu Bodhi's translation...

https://legacy.suttacentral.net/en/an3.65
“Keep to your own pastures, bhikkhus, walk in the haunts where your fathers roamed.
If ye thus walk in them, Māra will find no lodgement, Māra will find no foothold.”
— Cakkavattisīhanāda Sutta
