"The drinking of fermented & distilled liquors — when indulged in, developed, & pursued — is something that leads to hell, leads to rebirth as a common animal, leads to the realm of the hungry shades. The slightest of all the results coming from drinking fermented & distilled liquors is that, when one becomes a human being, it leads to mental derangement."

According to the Washington Post, Americans are dying at record numbers of alcohol related disease and accidents. Approximately 90,000 deaths annually, up 37% from only a few years ago. That is far more deaths than even the rx painkiller epidemic we have (which gets far more media attention).

So, to answer your question: yes.

This doesn't even include the pervasive suffering alcohol causes in people who don't die.

Not only alcoholic liquor but other drugs also should be refrained from .
I read in another forum last year , a monastic said it is ok once a while to consume a little , but , I can't agree to it. That’s why we have to consider those follow vinaya strictly and not because someone is well known or famous in academic field .
