just wanted to see if anyone had reflections on this sutta...
i guess i'm thinking about how at night when i lie down my mind goes half to the future and half to distracted elements of the "present."
when one is thinking about the future what can be done? Anything? Or is "fuming by night" and "flaming by day" just to be observed mindfully?

Re: this anthill fumes by night and flames by day
The following link may some help.
>Just as the ant-hill fumes by night and burns by day, we tend to mentally proliferates will all kinds of
ideas in the night of our lives—when we are overwhelmed by ignorance and uncertainty—and carry out
our plans and notions in the day of our lives—in our daily activities involving others. Here, the “night”
also represents our latent tendencies (anusaya) and the “day” our volitional actions>

Re: this anthill fumes by night and flames by day
I have always appreciated that in this sutta, a deity appears to tell a riddle, then vanishes, leaving a venerable monk fairly puzzled.

The bolt, monk, this is a synonym for ignorance. Take out the bolt, get rid of ignorance, dig, clever one, bringing a tool.

Thoughts, similar to speech, are judged for their benefit. Therefore, you can attempt to assess/judge the thoughts for their benefit. If they are deemed to be unbeneficial, they will be expelled, naturally.altar wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 1:44 am just wanted to see if anyone had reflections on this sutta...

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.
