Articles on the Visuddhimagga

Post by sherubtse » Sun May 03, 2009 12:26 am

I am reading through the _Visuddhimagga_, and am finding it to be more interesting than I had assumed.

Are there any good articles on this work? (I suppose it is too much to ask if there is a translation its Atthakatha ....)

With metta,

Not all of it. Parts of it have been translated by Nina van Gorkom and posted to http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/dhammastudygroup

I have tried to find it on the web but ended up just buying it

I believe a free distribution hard copy can be obtained from some free distribution places though
Blog, Suttas, Aj Chah, Facebook.

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …

He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

To be a little more specific, if you go to the "Files" section of the group (you have to join first...) there is a link:
Useful_Posts_March_2009.htm
Useful posts (with links) updated March 2009
Where you can find entries such as:
Visuddhimagga (Path of Purification) - Understanding with Sub-comy extracts
Visuddhimagga, ch X1V, Larry's index of text posts and Nina's summaries and translations of the commentary
These will take you to the specific topics.
