Buddha buddhā" (American and British way of pronouncing )

Post by canadianbuddhist »

What is the correct pronunciation of this term? Some people in Asia doest like the pronunciation "buddhā" (American and British way of pronouncing ) saying it is anglisizing the original pali word buddha.

Two things to note is that (1) the vowels are both short, and (2) the first syllable ends in a d and the second starts with an aspirated d (dh).

So it is: Bud-dha.

See, for example: https://www.dhammatalks.org/books/Chant ... n0003.html

Some Americans sound to me to be saying "Boo-da", i.e. the first syllable is a (very) long vowel, without the ending d. As you say, lengthening the a a little is also common, but I'd say that's a more subtle issue than the long o without an ending d.

They both (Asians and westerners) pronounce it wrong most of the time from what I've heard.
Pronounce every letter in the pali words, and observe the timing difference between long and short syllables.

Here's a short, quick guide to pronunciation guide.
