Introduction to cetasikas?

Post by Anukampati »

Hi all, apart from the text of the Abhidhamma itself, is there any good reading that would provide an introductory overview of the cetasikas, and/or a useful way to think about them?

Cetasikas - by Nina Van Gorkom

She discusses all 52, drawing from different abhidhamma texts and commentaries

I'd recommend N.K.G Mendis' Abhidhamma in Practice. It's short and gives a broad overview of the Abhidhamma method in general. Following that I'd suggest a translation of the Abhidhammattha Sangaha (Manual of Abhidhamma). There are two worth reading. The first being Narada's translation, the other would be Bhikkhu Bodhi's Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma. The latter is really a reworking and refreshing of the former. Shy of these there is the Dhammasanghani (the first book of the Abhidhamma Pitaka) itself where the cittas and cetasikas were first ennumerated. All of these are available online in PDF form from various sources. (accesstoinsight.org, archive.org).

I recommend A Comprehensive Manual of the Abhidhamma edited by Bhikkhu Bodhi and published by BPS and Pariyatti.
Kind regards,
Ben
