Dear Members,
Abhidhammic View of Kamma 4:Categorizing the Kamma
[Presented by Dr.Tep Sastri@ SariputtaDhamma/JTN/Mult]
Several posts, starting today, will be taken from the CMA(Comprehensive Manual
of Abhidhamma) Chapter V on the four types of kamma, i.e. by way of function; by
order of ripening; by time of ripening; by place of ripening.
I. By way of function:
1. productive kamma 2. supportive kamma 3. obstructive kamma 4. destructive
kamma.
II. By rder of ripening:
1. weighty kamma 2. death-proximate kamma 3. habitual kamma 4. reserve kamma.
III. By time of ripening:
1. immediately effective kamma 2. subsequently effective kamma 3. indefinitely
effective kamma 4. defunct kamma.
IV By place of ripening:
1. unwholesome kamma 2. sense-sphere wholesome kamma 3. fine-material-sphere
wholesome kamma 4. immaterial-sphere wholesome kamma.
CMA V, p. 200: All volition action, except that of a Buddha or an arahant,
constitutes kamma. The Buddhas and the arahants do not accumulate kamma, since
they have eradicated ignorance and craving, the roots of kamma. Nevertheless,
even the Buddhas and the arahants are bound to experience the ripening of their
past kamma as long as their psychological personality persists, that is, until
they pass away.
The law of kamma(kammaniyaama) is self-subsistent in its operation, ensuring
that willed deeds produce their effects in accordance with their ethical quality
as surely as seeds bear fruit in accordance with their species. The direct
products of kamma are the resultant(vipaaka) states of consciousness andmental
factors that arise when kamma finds the right conditions to frucitify. Kamma
also produce distinct type of matter in the organic bodies of living beings,
called materiality originating from kamma(kammasamu.t.thaana-ruupa). (end quote)
The next post will be about productive and supportive kammas.

DhammicView of Kamma: Categorizing the Kamma
Re: DhammicView of Kamma: Categorizing the Kamma
The above order of priority is commonly cited. So why does this article swap the order for Death-proximate and Habitual kamma in this book by Mendis?
The object that presents itself to the mind-door just before death is determined by kamma on a priority basis as follows:
1. Some weighty action performed earlier by the dying person. This may be meritorious such as a jhānic ecstasy, or it may be demeritorious, some heinous crime. Either of these would be so powerful as to eclipse all other kammas in determining rebirth. This is called garuka kamma.
2. If there is no such weighty action, what has been done habitually — either good or bad — will ripen. This is called ācinna kamma.
3. If habitual kamma does not ripen what is called death-proximate kamma fructifies. In this case the thought that was experienced at the time of a good or bad action in the recent past recurs at the time of death. This is referred to as aasanna kamma.
4. If the first three are lacking, some stored up kamma from the past will ripen. This is called katatta kamma.
Is it a mistake by Mendis?
Ajahn Brahmali commented on the subject in an article reproduced in suttacentral (https://discourse.suttacentral.net/t/ho ... u-die/2748) but he too did not critique the different order of priority.

Visuddhimagga CHAPTER XIX Purification by Overcoming Doubt15.note3 Vism-mhþ
“Herein, the weighty ripens first of all and that is why it is so called. When
weighty kamma is lacking, what has been much done ripens. When that is lacking,
death-threshold kamma ripens. When that too is lacking, then kamma done in previous
births, which is called ‘kamma [stored up] by being performed,’ ripens. And the last
three when produced can be strong or weak” (Vism-mhþ 769ff.). Vism-mhþ then cites
various Birth Stories and MN 136 in order to show how, for various reasons, the result
of one kind of kamma may be delayed or displaced by the result of another. Vismmhþ
concludes: “This is the province of the Tathágata’s Knowledge of the Great
Exposition of Kamma, in other words, the mastery of the order of ripening of such
and such kamma for such and such reasons.”

I see...it's from the VM. THe Abhidhammattha Sangaha ranks it this way.robertk wrote: ↑Thu Oct 19, 2017 7:56 am Visuddhimagga CHAPTER XIX Purification by Overcoming Doubt15.note3 Vism-mhþ

Re: DhammicView of Kamma: Categorizing the Kamma
Visuddhimagga's sub commentary said that:
1st javana-kamma can give fruit just in this life.
7th javana-kamma can give fruit just in next life.
2nd-6th javana-kamma can give fruit begin at the life after next life until parinibbana. This kamma is katattavapana-kamma.
Don't use Thai dictionary translation of katattavapanakamma, it is wrong, not compatible with commentary.
