When a manifestation or reincarnation of a lama is identified, it is typically a child, and that child is then trained to surf that lama's mindstream, or an aspect of it.
What happens if the training doesn't take, and the child, now an adult, wishes to move on with their life. Are they still a manifestation of or reincarnation of the lama?
Relatedly, can the Dalai Lama up and quit?

Hi curlyfries, and welcome to Dhamma Wheel!
You might get an answer to this question here on Dhamma Wheel, but this site is mainly about Theravadan theory and practice. For Tibetan paths, you might be better off asking this at Dharma Wheel, our sister site:

Apparently he still follows Tibetan Buddhism, but doesn't believe he's a tulku (reincarnation of a famous Rinpoche).
