HHDL on Interdialog Between Theravadin & Tibetan Buddhists

Post by Dorje Shedrub » Sat Jun 02, 2018 1:35 am

HHDL gives a beautiful talk at the inauguration of Thai temple in Bodhgaya where he refers to Theravadin monks as seniors to Tibetan monks and requests renewal of monastic educational exchange program between Thai and Tibetan temple.

That's awesome. HHDL has made amazing efforts for interdialogues during these past few decades. I've visited his Religion-Science institute at Emory University, and it's a marvelous testament to the power of interdisciplinary cooperation. I would love to meet him someday.

Thanks for sharing this.

I was particularly touched by the mutual respect and affection given between HHDL and the senior Theravadin monk. HHDL sets a good example for Mahayana practitioners not to disparage Theravada.
"Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings;
Radiating kindness over the entire world:
Spreading upwards to the skies,
And downwards to the depths;
Outwards and unbounded,"

When HHDL visited my city a few years ago he requested Pali chanting for the opening, so a number of monks and lay people from my Wat were up on the stage as the warm-up act... As I recall there was some hitch that resulted in HHDL arriving late, so after the Pali chanting he skipped the Tibetan chanting that was originally on the programme...

Here HHDL is chanting in Pali with Thai monks. Theravadin monks often chant in Pali (followed by monks chanting in Sanskrit, then Tibetan) at the beginning when HHDL gives Kalachakra initiation.

HHDL's life journey has been utterly amazing, awe-inspiring - and I don't say that sort of thing about many people at all!
Memo to self: must find time to watch Kundun again. I listen to the soundtrack pretty often (it's great, too) but have only seen the movie once.

The UN Vesak Day conferences are a great example of interdialog.

At one point during the break I (a European lay tantric practitioner) was discussing Dhamma/Dharma with a Sri Lankan Theravada monk and a Singaporean Mahayana monk.

It is heartening when one can take part in (huge, over 5000 participants) non-sectarian Buddhist events like this.
ye dhammā hetuppabhavā tesaṁ hetuṁ tathāgato āha,
tesaṃca yo nirodho - evaṁvādī mahāsamaṇo.

Of those phenomena which arise from causes:
Those causes have been taught by the Tathāgata,
And their cessation too - thus proclaims the Great Ascetic.

That would be pretty cool.

Just an FYI if you search UN Vesak on youtube there are various videos from the recent events (2018, 2017), including keynote speeches, etc.

Jetsunma comparing Arahant and Concept of Buddhahood in Mahayana as the same goal.
She is one of the most enlightened beings I have come across.
The day she throws away her feminist agenda she will be an Arahant.
