It is popularly believed that the modern revival of the bhikkhuni sangha started with the ordination in Sarnath in 1996 followed by another in Bodh Gaya in 1998. However, this article states that Nepali women were being ordained in India as early as 1934. http://www.nepal-traveller.com/index.ph ... cle&id=146" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm curious to know how these ordinations were performed.
While initiatives in Thailand and Myanmar during the previous century eventually failed , there exists in Nepal today a thriving bhikkhuni sangha. Are these nuns the descendents of Nepali bhikkhunis ordained in the 1930s?
