....it is worth noting that the arahats (you can check this out by asking arahat Ajahn Suchart through his facebook page), say that only by keeping the 5 precepts can one be assured of not falling into the lower realms in one's next birth.
Why do people drink? - to relax and feel pleasant sensations and herein lies the core of the Buddha's teachings - we are attached and want to keep pleasant feelings and dislike and want to get rid of unpleasant sensations - but it is impossible to hold onto pleasant feelings as everything is impermanent ….one gets a feeling of pleasure - remembers it and uses a sensory stimulus to try and reexperience that pleasure again - Most good Dhamma books will talk of this at length and better to go to those who know and can explain better to anyone who is really interested.
This dhamma talk also goes into the benefit of keeping the 5 precepts : by Ajahn Martin.....
Surely we want the best for ourselves - and our friends ….and this may entail going against social norms …..

Yes Cappuchino….I would agree and found that the passage in the book 'Uncommon wisdom' by the highly attained monk, Ajahn Pannavaddho - an English student of Ajahn Maha Bowa in Thailand, concerning all the people with mental illness now - he says it is a consequence of lack of morality...... one of the moral precepts that the Buddha gave is to abstain from intoxicants. Many don't want to give up their sense pleasures and will find reasons to reject this -it may not be socially palatable but that doesn't make it untrue ... and if people look closely at the reasons why they want to take intoxicants - such as alcohol - it is to escape from unpleasant sensations - including the need for social acceptance among others - and people wont believe it until they do - the Buddha only taught two things - suffering and the end of suffering ….. :anjali: ...and of course most Buddhists know this …..
