Oldest Theravada Collections

Post by form » Wed Aug 14, 2019 3:24 am

If I remember correctly, I read somewhere that the fourth and fifth books of the sutta nipatta is considered very old. Can I get some confirmation if that is correct?

Also, which other collections aside from dhammapada are considered the oldest?

the fourth sutta nipatta
I am now reading Snp 4 for the first time. It Includes:
They say: “In our Dharma purity’s found”
but deny that it is found in the Dharma of others.
On what they depend they say “it’s the best”,
and so settle down in their individual truths.

dhammapada
Dhammapada says:
273. Of all the paths the Eightfold Path is the best; of all the truths the Four Noble Truths are the best; of all things passionlessness is the best: of men the Seeing One (the Buddha) is the best.

274. This is the only path; there is none other for the purification of insight.

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Doodot, some materials in book 4 I find is explained in a unique way from other places in the nikaya. The part on perception causing desire. It seems something like conditioning in modern psychology.
