Everyone, except the fully liberated ones, is to some degree mentally ill. The defilements are the expressions of craving and ignorance. A society may decide to label some of these expressions as mental illness.

In the West, psychiatrists and other professionals have managed to define an increasing number of conditions and experiences and behaviours as mental illness. We tend to view the world through a medical lens, so the "mental illness" metaphor found within the suttas tends to get emphasised.

This approach is casually mentioned in bodhi's book 8foldpath and w rahula's what the Buddha's taught. That is why I thought they may have read from an influential reference. I suspect pali text society, but it is just my gutt feeling.

Mental illness arises due to cravings ( greed vexation & illusion. This fact is well explained in Sabbasava sutta.
It is also mentioned that sabbasava sutta refers to thoughts emotions and desires and is a sutta referred to persons rather than damma. Fermentations arising from cravings from the past according to sutta has to be abandoned by seeing restraint usage toleration avoiding destroying or by development. In destroying craving emotions and thoughts are de-fermented.
Asava ( desires in sinhala) can be subdued by methods mentioned above.
In western medicine electrolysis which suppress thoughts and emotions are used to cure mental illness but is not permanent. But the methods of meditation to suppress mental fermentation can stop emotions due to thoughts of cravings.
May I request the post readers to read sabbasava sutta as I am unable to down load for reference.
May I also mention that emotions of love and anger are caused by hormones which are developed within us.

DNA pattern affects the expression of certain brain chemicals which will affect behaviour, mood and emotions.

This will be the biological approach of psychology. For example, they use a medicine to alter a neurotransmitter level to improve mood of a patient.

But apart from those whose taints have been destroyed, it is hard to find people in the world who can claim to enjoy mental health even for a moment.

There's a lot of ways people can get psychosis genetic predisposition, solitary confinement, and sometimes it just happens without genetics.
Take care of mindfulness and mindfulness will take care of you.
