"Does Master Gotama have any position at all?"

"A 'position,' Vaccha, is something that a Tathagata has done away with. What a Tathagata sees is this: 'Such is form, such its origination, such its disappearance; such is feeling, such its origination, such its disappearance; such is perception...such are fabrications...such is consciousness, such its origination, such its disappearance.' Because of this, I say, a Tathagata — with the ending, fading away, cessation, renunciation, & relinquishment of all construings, all excogitations, all I-making & mine-making & obsessions with conceit — is, through lack of clinging/sustenance, released."

My favourite sutta. I was Vacchagotta for such a long time.

Hi. I think this is difficult to answer because "nama" is a word that is doctrinally important in Brahmanism and has a explicit meaning in Brahmanism; where it literally means "name-form" or "naming-forms".

However, the Buddha defined "nama" as "feeling, perception, intention, contact & attention"; which resulted in Buddhists regarding "nama" to mean "mentality" rather than "name". For example, when ignorance & fermentations (1st link) & sankharas (2nd link) control mentality (nama; 4th link)), this culminates "inappropriate attention" (4th link) to those sankharas (2nd link) and the seeking of related external objects (6th link) of gratification via the sense bases (5th link). Therefore, I personally tend to agree with Buddhaghosa's explanation of "nama" as "inclination" or "bent".

In addition, the Buddha said nama & consciousness are mutually dependent; that consciousness cannot exist without nama. Yet there are suttas spoken to Brahmans, such as DN 11, MN 49, SN 7.6, where the Buddha refers to a bright featureless consciousness where "nama" is destroyed. This gives the impression that these suttas, plus DN 15, retain a Brahmanistic meaning for "nama"; in which consciousness & nama are not mutually dependent; because "nama" means "name" in these suttas for Brahmins rather than "mentality".

Why the Buddha decided to hijack this Brahmanistic term is also unexplained to me. But that "nama-rupa" is the "mind-body" stirred up by inner tendencies (ignorances) & sankharas to develop an "inclination" or "bent" towards an external sense object is self-evident to me.
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

The word Dhamma in whatever ways it is expressed is already a label.
