They will be examining a certain functionality, and to do so, the word "mind" as a "noun" becomes needed (or functions as) to define the function to be examined.
Sorry , but the doctors and scientists examine the brains not the mind itself , perhaps psychologist will examine the "symptoms" of the Assuming mind .

They would still examine the brain as a functioning organ, and even if they divide it into different parts, they would be thinking of separate functions. Therefore, the name itself is a function "in disguise"
And the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Behold now, bhikkhus, I exhort you: All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!"

This was the last word of the Tathagata.
