Is there any sutta support for the Ten Imperfections of Insight

Post by budo »

To my knowledge the progress of insight was developed in this way

1. Rathavinãta Sutta
"In the same way, my friend, purity in terms of virtue is simply for the sake of purity in terms of mind. Purity in terms of mind is simply for the sake of purity in terms of view. Purity in terms of view is simply for the sake of purity in terms of the overcoming of perplexity. Purity in terms of the overcoming of perplexity is simply for the sake of purity in terms of knowledge & vision of what is & is not the path. Purity in terms of knowledge & vision of what is & is not the path is simply for the sake of purity in terms of knowledge & vision of the way. Purity in terms of knowledge & vision of the way is simply for the sake of purity in terms of knowledge & vision. Purity in terms of knowledge & vision is simply for the sake of total Unbinding through lack of clinging. And it's for the sake of total Unbinding through lack of clinging that the holy life is lived under the Blessed One."
There is also Upanisa sutta which is the dependent origination leading to enlightenment which has Knowledge & vision of things as they are -> disenchantment -> dispassion -> emancipation -> destruction of cankers

2. Patisambidhamagga & Vimuttimagga

- Comprehension (廣觀)
- Rise and fall (起滅)
- Dissolution (滅)
- Fear & disadvantage & disenchantment (畏 & 過患 & 厭離)
- Delight in deliverance & equanimity (樂解脫 & 捨)
- Conformity (相似)

"In the Patisambhidamagga, there are only 5 stages presented. The first three stages are the same and the last two are "fear & disadvantage" (bhaya & ādīnava) and "wish for deliverance & equanimity towards formations" (muñcitukamyatā & saṅkhārupekkhā).[3]"

3. Visuddhimagga

According to the Visuddhimagga, the 10 imperfections of insight are part of "3.Sammasana ñana - Knowledge of the three characteristics of mental and physical processes.", which according to Ven Nanarama is Knowledge by Comprehension belonging to "Purification by Knowledge and Vision of What is Path and Not-Path "

Are the 10 imperfections of insight listed anywhere in the 5 nikayas or chinese agamas?

Thank you
