what meditation pratice did the Buddha while in retreat?

Post by tinhtan »

Hello all
Sometimes, the Buddha ask the sangha to let him alone for a month or 3 months retreat, only a monk is allowed to serve him lunch.
I remenber that there is a sutta where the Buddha say what meditation pratice he is doing while in retreat. It seems that he pratice anapanasati but i'm not sure.
Does anyone know what is the sutta name ?

Thanks for help

Then the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion after the passing of
three months, addressed the monks: “Monks, if wanderers of other sects
ask you, ‘By means of what dwelling, friends, did Gotama the
contemplative mostly dwell during the rains residence?’: You, thus asked,
should answer them in this way: ‘It was by means of the concentration of
mindfulness of breathing that the Blessed One mostly dwelled.’ …

This means that right mindfulness functions not only as a factor of the path,
but also as a pleasant pastime for those who have fully developed the path and
tasted its ultimate fruit.

What did Buddha do to pass his time?

Thank you very much SarathW,
so the sutta is from SN 54.11.
I'm very pleased to discover the treatise on Right Mindfulness by Thanissaro Bikkhu.
There is an updated version : https://www.dhammatalks.org/ebook_index ... 180109.pdf

Speaking broadly, there is a book by Ven. Analayo, "A Meditator's Life of the Buddha", which apparently follows the Buddha's progression in meditation subjects:
