Who attained enlightenment on the 7th day as a king

Post by Rahula »

Dear all

Please help me to find following story in Buddhist literature.

The story I remember goes as following;

Once there was a king's man who won some battle for the king. King offered him all fabulous luxuries that a king enjoys for 7 days or so. Once he saw the Buddha while going to the bathing place on the Elephant. He saluted while still on the Elephant.

Buddha had said to his followers that this man will come to him in the evening and will become an enlightened one.

On the 7th day his favourite dancing girl died in front of him. Then he visited the Buddha and became an enlightened one.

Please point me to a reference where I can find the full story.

Thank you.
May you be happy, healthy & successful in everything you do! :anjali:

It's the background story to Dhammapada 171.

Edit:

On second thoughts, the story of Santati is a better fit. Both stories have a dying nautch-girl, but only in the second does anyone get enlightened.

Yena yena hi maññanti,
tato taṃ hoti aññathā.

In whatever way they conceive it,
It turns out otherwise.
