Repentance Cultivation

Post by Nicholas Weeks »

I have heard of using the Four Right Exertions as part of a regular practice of repentance from our many vices in this life and past lives. Anyone have a more detailed outline of said practice?
Good and evil have no fixed form. It's as easy to turn from doing bad to doing good as it is to flip over the hand from the back to the palm. It's simply up to us to do it. Master Hsuan Hua.

The Four Right Exertions refer to these four;

Effort to abandon arisen bad states
Effort to prevent unarisen bad states
Effort to maintain arisen wholesome states
Effort to give rise to unarisen wholesome states

as i understand it;
one does this by any means one at ones disposal

Ie just thinking certain thoughts will fulfil these factors
If one is earnestly striving every day, mindful of the goal, constantly trying to grow in the Dhamma by undertaking various practices and observances for the benefit of oneself and others, in such a case there will arise many moments fulfilling the factors of right efforts, except when one will be thinking thoughts and acting out of greed anger and delusion, those states wont have the factors of right effort.
