Best School for study of Theravāda/Early Buddhism & Pāḷi

Post by dylanj » Thu May 17, 2018 12:04 am

So I dropped out of university awhile ago because the Theology & Religious Studies program was awful & I was accumulating a mass of debt. But I want to go back & finish a degree, I want to study pāḷi & perhaps Buddhist Studies, primarily w/r/t the early texts & history of early buddhism.

I am curious if anyone can recommend a place to do this. I want it to be cheap. I would prefer Sri Lanka & expect the best institutions to be there but am open to hearing otherwise.
susukhaṁ vata nibbānaṁ,
asokaṁ virajaṁ khemaṁ,
yattha dukkhaṁ nirujjhatī

Oh! extinction is so very blissful,
As taught by the One Rightly Self-Awakened:
Sorrowless, stainless, secure;
Where suffering all ceases

etaṁ santaṁ etaṁ paṇītaṁ yadidaṁ sabbasaṅkhārasamatho sabbūpadhipaṭi nissaggo taṇhakkhayo virāgo nirodho nibbānaṁ

This is peaceful, this is excellent, that is: the stilling of all preparations, the relinquishment of all attachments, the destruction of craving, detachment, cessation, extinction.

Chulalongkorn? I understand a lot of monks study Pali and stuff there.
You can do both undergrad and graduate programs there,

Hi Dylan,

Is your interest in Sri Lanka due to the work of, for example, Bhikkhu Analayo, who did his PhD at University of Peradeniya: https://www.buddhismuskunde.uni-hamburg ... alayo.html?

If so, I'd be inclined to ask him about possible options.

Others who come to mind are:

Bhikkhuni Dhammadina, who has been assisting with his course on Bhikkhu Ñāṇananda's Nibbana Sermons:
She is in Taiwan:

Shi Huifeng (Matt Osborn), who used to post here quite a lot. memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=742
He's originally from New Zealand, with a PhD from University of Hong Kong. When we met in Hong Kong he gave me a copy of Richard Gombrich's book "What the Buddha Thought". He's now in Taiwan:
