"Just as the ocean has a single taste — that of salt — in the same way, this Dhamma-Vinaya has a single taste: that of release."

Precepts are training rules that one takes on voluntarily. It is refuge that makes one a upasaka:Dhammarakkhito wrote: ↑Tue May 08, 2018 7:43 pm keeping the five precepts is basic practice for any upasaka
Is it better to be a virtuous buddhist than not? Definitely. But a lot of good can also be done taking only refuge and being generous, thus excluding nobody, not even butchers, hunters, archers etc. from the path.“In what way, Bhante, is one a lay follower?”
“When, Mahānāma, one has gone for refuge to the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Saṅgha, in that way one is a lay follower.”
“In what way, Bhante, is a lay follower virtuous?”
“When, Mahānāma, a lay follower abstains from the destruction of life, from taking what is not given, from sexual misconduct, from false speech, and from liquor, wine, and intoxicants, the basis for heedlessness, in that way a lay follower is virtuous.”

Re: No objections to Livelihood by Archery?
The number of people in traditionally Buddhist countries who keep the five precepts is possibly quite small. By your standards then, they're not upasakas, and possibly don't count as "true Buddhists".binocular wrote: ↑Tue May 08, 2018 8:39 pmCongratulations, then, you've just made Buddhism a minor religious movement.Dhammarakkhito wrote: ↑Tue May 08, 2018 7:43 pmkeeping the five precepts is basic practice for any upasaka

How does one make a livelihood from archery in compliance with Right Livelihood?
"Monks, a lay follower should not engage in five types of business. Which five? Business in weapons, business in human beings, business in meat, business in intoxicants, and business in poison.
"These are the five types of business that a lay follower should not engage in."'
So, anything outside of these five restrictions, you can safely use archery to make a living.

As a buddhist the five example is a must to follow , but , outside the five still have some probably Non dhammic business or jobs. Example , as a police officer or army (not against business in weapons) , but , probably when you execute your duty you shoot a person , your action would be against the five precepts !
