Total number of suttas in the Pali Canon

Post by kalyanamitta » Thu Mar 22, 2018 12:02 am

Does anyone have a tally of the total number of suttas in the Pali Canon? How about in the first four Nikayas? Thank you.

I read that there are 34 suttas in the Digha Nikaya and 152 in the Majjhima Nikaya. I don't have the print copies of the Samyutta Nikaya and Anguttara Nikaya here with me but seem to recall that the number of suttas was mentioned near the beginning of the Bhikkhu Bodhi translations. Would anyone happen to have either of those on hand and able to check? Thanks.

Digha Nikaya = 34
Majjhima Nikaya = 152
Samyutta Nikaya = 7,762
Anguttara Nikaya = 2,344
Khuddaka Nikàya = 15 books (not sure how many suttas)

Keep in mind some of the suttas are 50 pages long[EDIT: WRONG! Thanks to Dylanj for correcting me.] and some are just two lines long, or one sentance.

There is no sutta that is 50 pages long. Mahāparinibbāna is the longest (unless you count some of the extraneous books of KN) & it's nowhere near that long.
susukhaṁ vata nibbānaṁ,
sammāsambuddhadesitaṁ;
asokaṁ virajaṁ khemaṁ,
yattha dukkhaṁ nirujjhatī

Oh! extinction is so very blissful,
As taught by the One Rightly Self-Awakened:
Sorrowless, stainless, secure;
Where suffering all ceases

etaṁ santaṁ etaṁ paṇītaṁ yadidaṁ sabbasaṅkhārasamatho sabbūpadhipaṭi nissaggo taṇhakkhayo virāgo nirodho nibbānaṁ

This is peaceful, this is excellent, that is: the stilling of all preparations, the relinquishment of all attachments, the destruction of craving, detachment, cessation, extinction.

Here is what I calculated when I began my study

AN – 3872
DN – 34
MN – 152
SN – 2904
Sutta Nipata – 72
Udana – 80
Itivuttaka – 112

Total 7226

If AN is taken as 9565 that is 5693 more or 12919

Weekly preaching average is a whopping (12919 ÷ 44) ÷ 52 = 5.64 suttas per week.

Speaking of length Avataṃsaka Sūtra is 1500 pages long but from Mahayana.

That still leaves the Abhidhamma. Even if we accept that they are not Buddha’s own words but interpretations and additions by later scholars, at least we have to agree the source is him. The discussions must have begun with him and carried on till they were written down two or three centuries later.

And add in the many many elisions, and it's well over 50 pages.
