Pali pronunciation of Thanissaro

Post by kalyanamitta »

I had a quick question about Pali pronunciation. How would one pronounce "thanissaro" as in the case of Thanissaro Bhikkhu? Thanks in advance.

I cannot answer this question however Bhikkhu Thanissaro pronounces his Pali name at the start of this 10 minute video:

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

So it seems like Thanissaro sounds like tawny-sorrow (pardon my sounding it out) unless I misheard. Thank you.

It is pronounced

Tuh-niss- sorrow

:namaste:
Liberation is the inevitable fruit of the path and is bound to blossom forth when there is steady and persistent practice. The only requirements for reaching the final goal are two: to start and to continue. If these requirements are met there is no doubt the goal will be attained. This is the Dhamma, the undeviating law.

Ṭhānissaro

it is a retroflex "t"
it is fairly similar to an English "t" but the end of your tongue touches the top of the palate, curved back a bit
it is also aspirated, you release it with a breath-pulse

the ā is long & similar to "o" in "body"

the "n" is dental
you touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your front teeth, less similar to english than a retroflex.
unaspirated (in english aspiration can be natural so you may need to make an effort to *not* release a substantial breath-pulse)

the "i" is like in "bit"

s is like english

the next "a" is short & pronounced like in "but"

r is like english

the o is long & pronounced like "oh"

the syllables are... ṭhā nis sa ro
the relative duration of the syllables are 2 2 1 2
Born, become, arisen – made, prepared, short-lived
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in

Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss
