The sutta with the sandals

Post by Aleksander »

I read a sutta a long time ago where the Buddha said that you should wear sandals instead of trying to clear the way of every small pebble and branch. Now I can't find this sutta again. Does anyone know what sutta I mean?

Shantideva said this in the bodhisattvacaryāvatāra.
“Where would I find enough leather
To cover the entire surface of the earth?
But with leather soles beneath my feet,
It’s as if the whole world has been covered.”
Born, become, arisen – made, prepared, short-lived
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in

Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss

It will be interesting if the underlying meaning of this can be elaborated. Can somebody explain please?
