Did the Buddha say it was in our well being to visit all the holy pilgrimage sites?

Post by Strive4Karuna »

I vaugey remember reading somewhere that the Buddha said that there is some sort of benefit on going on a pilgrimage to visit the holy places.

Did he say that it was in our well being to do so? If my recollection has not failed me was it something a long the lines that all beings who visit all the sites will one day find enlightenment similar to what he said that all layfolk who pratice the vows on uposatha will one day find enlightenment?

It's not a requirement, but recommended, from DN 16:

Ananda, there are four places the sight of which will arouse strong emotion in those with faith. Which four? Here the Tathagata was born, this is the first place. Here the Tathagata attained Enlightenment, this is the second place. Here the Tathagata set in motion the Wheel of the Dhamma, this is the third place. Here the Tathagata attained final Nibbana without remainder, this is the fourth place. The monk or nun, layman or laywoman, who has faith should visit these places. And anyone who dies while making a pilgrimage to these places with a devout heart will, at the breaking up of the body, be reborn in heaven.”

Yes. Several tourist organizations and Buddhist groups have them. You could also do it yourself. Many do.

One of the best organisations re visit in Buddhist sites in India is " Maha Bodhi Society " in India. Hopefully you may try it online.
