15th century sinhala poem on consequences of kamma
15th century sinhala poem on consequences of kamma
Born, become, arisen – made, prepared, short-lived
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in
Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in
Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss

This book is still in use at damma schools in Sri lanka and at pirivenas ( schools for priests mainly) with government sponsorship, also for children as sunday schools to teach damma and sometime back these verses had to be memorised by students.dylanj wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 1:26 am Lowada Sangarāva - Venerable Vīdāgama Maitreya Mahāthera

“As the lamp consumes oil, the path realises Nibbana”
Re: 15th century sinhala poem on consequences of kamma
One of my favorites:
Pleased in mind, I pay homage to the true Dhamma
proclaimed by the Buddha with discerning wisdom to
suit the levels of understanding of all beings-the
Dhamma which invites one to come-and-see and
which is comprehensible by each according to his
degree of intelligence.

Another favorite.
A dog licks in vain a fleshless bone which has nothing in
it to fill its stomach6
. So vain are sensual pleasures for
which you should not feel greedy. Though you may not
see anything wrong in them, they lead only to suffering.

Is it not for hunger, that you eat tasty rice? Is it not for the foul
smell, that you apply scent on your body? These are only
medicines for the sicknesses of beings in this world. Why, then
do you regard these as pleasures?

What is interesting here is hunger is considered a sickness. Is it not for hunger, that you eat tasty rice?

It is pretty amazing to read my own post!
Only a few weeks ago this wisdom enters my mind without knowing that I have already made a post eight months ago.
I thought it was my own discovery but I did not know it came from the teaching of Buddha.
It appears the knowledge and wisdom has a time to mature!

I don't understand sinhala, but I played this for devas.
I host a sutta discussion via Zoom Sundays at 11AM Chicago time — message me if you are interested
