Taking refuge

Post by crandallm83 » Tue Apr 23, 2013 9:16 pm

I have been unable to locate a sahga where I live in NH, I am going to take refuge later this week and have a question. Can I do this alone or do I need someone ordained to guide me?

Peace and happiness,

You could take it alone in private. There is no 'requirement' of an official ceremony (to call yourself a Buddhist), but some prefer to take the Triple Refuge with a monk or nun at a temple.

Triple Refuge:
Buddham saranam gacchàmi
Dhammam saranam gacchàmi
Sangham saranam gacchàmi
Dutiyampi Buddham saranam gacchàmi
Dutiyampi Dhammam saranam gacchàmi
Dutiyampi Sangham saranam gacchàmi
Tatiyampi Buddham saranam gacchàmi
Tatiyampi Dhammam saranam gacchàmi
Tatiyampi Sangham saranam gacchàmi

5 precepts:
Panatipata veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
Adinnadana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
Kamesu micchacara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
Musavada veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami
Suramerayamajja pamadatthana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami

You can also take your Refuge Vows online, here: http://what-buddha-said.net/sangha/Saddhamma_Sangha.htm
Now having obtained a precious human body,
I do not have the luxury of remaining on a distracted path.

Or online here:

But you have to register for that site, and there is a small registration fee. (~$2)

as others are, so am I."
Having thus identified self and others,
harm no one nor have them harmed.
