Is bhavanga sotha same as mind stream?

What is bhavanga? Did Buddha teach it?

No. It's mentioned a couple of times in the Patthāna of the Abhidhamma Pitaka, but from there on it was commentators and meditation teachers who took the ball and ran with it.

Here is some information about the Abhidhamma, which is either an elaboration, or taught by the Buddha, depending on your point of view:
