The Great Helper _/\_

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Mon Oct 10, 2016 11:35 pm

Friends:

Karunã: The Great Good Helper!

Image

Karuna is feeling the pain of other beings, either partially or completely;

Possible translations:
1: Pity not from above: “I am better”, but as if in the other being’s shoes…
2: Compassion is OK, but that is difficult to reach up to for many beings…
3: Fellow feeling, sympathy, empathy, understanding are all OK, but somewhat
missing these essential points:

A: It is an inability to see and accept other being’s suffering and distress!
B: It is a deep desire to make others feel free, glad, happy and peaceful!
C: It is extended to and pervaded over many beings simultaneously…

The proximate cause of Karuna = pity is noticing other being’s helplessness.
The immediate effect of Karuna = pity is evaporation of all evil cruelty!

Pity (Karuna) is one of the four divine and infinite dwellings (Brahmavihara):

Question 82: What are the karmic consequence of arguing and back-biting with one's parents?

Question 83: I have a friend who isn't Buddhist. She is not a good friend in terms of morality,
she drinks, she watches bad movies etc. However, despite of these weaknesses,
she did do good things to me like being with me at tough times, giving me gifts.
She is most of the time a nuisance and is very rude to me at times.
Should I end this friendship with her?

Question 84: I've seen people in social media spreading bad views on Buddhism.
I have tried my best to correct them however, they do not seem to understand
their mistakes. Should I continue despite of their negative comments?

How is the Mental Release by Mutual Joy?

Image

The Blessed Buddha once explained:
How is the release of mind by infinite mutual joy (Mudita) achieved?
What does this liberation have as its destination, what is its culmination,
what is its sweet fruit, and what is the ultimate goal of mental release
by universally mutual, unselfish, altruistic, appreciative & rejoicing joy?
Here, Bhikkhus, a Bhikkhu dwells pervading the frontal quadrant with a
mind imbued with infinite mutual joy, so the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quadrant.
As above, so below, across, and everywhere to all beings as for himself,
he dwells pervading the entire cosmos with a mind fully saturated with
unlimited mutual joy, immense, exalted, measureless, without hostility,
without any enmity, without any trace of ill will, of jealousy or of envy!
Thus prepared and mentally quite expanded, he then develops:
1: The Awareness Link to Awakening joined with limitless mutual joy.
2: The Investigation Link to Awakening fused with such mutual joy.
3: The Energy Link to Awakening together with infinite mutual joy.
4: The Joy Link to Awakening accompanied with absolute mutual joy.
5: The Tranquillity Link to Awakening linked with noble mutual joy.
6: The Concentration Link to Awakening associated with mutual joy.
7: The Equanimity Link to Awakening joined with endless mutual joy.

Based upon seclusion, disillusion, ceasing, and culminating in release...

Image

If he then wishes:
May I dwell experiencing repulsion by any attractive & tempting object,
then he can dwell experiencing repulsiveness therein. If he wishes: May I
dwell experiencing the unrepulsive in any disgusting and repulsive object,
then he experiences pleasing beauty in whatever disgusting & ugly thing!
If he wishes: Avoiding both the repulsive & the unrepulsive, may I dwell
in equanimity, just aware & clearly comprehending, then he experiences
equanimity, just aware and clearly comprehending! When meditating he
can completely transcend the realm of infinitude of space, only aware
that consciousness is infinite, he can enter and dwell in the sphere of the
infinitude of consciousness.. I tell you Bhikkhus for a quite wise Bhikkhu
here, who has not yet penetrated to an even more superior mental release,
the mental release by infinite, altruistic and mutual joy has the sphere of
the infinitude of consciousness as its culmination!

Comments: Are you Discontent? Here is Why!
Mutual joy is the proximate cause of contentment.
Consequentially: Lack of mutual joy produces frustrated discontent!
Mutual joy also eliminates jealousy and envy! Absence of mutual joy
therefore induces the acid like mental pain called envy and jealousy!

Exquisite is Equanimity..

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Thu Oct 13, 2016 10:57 pm

Friends:

Equanimity gives delicate Peace & Happiness!

Image

Equanimity (Upekkha) entails a composed equipoise of solid mental balance!
It is Tatra-majjhattata = keeping to the moderate middle of all phenomena.
Equanimity balances consciousness so it prevents both all excessiveness and
any deficiency. In equanimity mind is neither attracted by attractive things,
nor repelled by repulsive things. The cause of equanimity is seeing the law of
kamma: All beings are born and created by their kamma, they are owners of
their kamma, inherit their kamma, whatever they do, whether good or bad,
the effects of that will be theirs only, following them like a shadow of past!
The effect of Equanimity is threefold:
Exquisite, relaxed & subtle peace felt as calm happiness is instantly gained.
Equanimity purifies and completes all the 7 crucial Links to Awakening...
Equanimity is the proximate cause of knowledge and vision (ñanadassana)!

Today is Vap Poya Observance Day!

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Fri Oct 14, 2016 7:25 pm

Friends:

How to be a Real Buddhist through Observance?

Vap Poya day is the full-moon of October. This holy day celebrates the
end of the Bhikkhu's three months rains retreat and marks the Kathina
month of robes , where lay people donate a set of robes to the Sangha.
This also celebrates the day that Buddha began to teach the Abhidhamma!

Image
The Buddha descending from the Tusita Level after having spent a rains
retreat there explaining the Abhidhamma to the assembled devas during
a single three months long speech! His biological mother Mahamaya, who
died 7 days after his birth, and was reborn there as a deva, was present.
He is followed down by the deva rulers Sakka and Maha-Brahma.

More about this Higher Abhidhamma Science:
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/abhi/index.html

More about the Kathina Ceremony:
http://What-Buddha-Said.net/drops/III/K ... remony.htm

Image
ImageImage
ImageImage
The Kathina Ceremony of giving robes to the Maha-Sangha and receive blessing merit thereby!

On such Full-Moon Uposatha Poya Observance days:
Any Lay Buddhist simply joins the Three Refuges and undertakes the
Five Precepts like this: Newly bathed, shaved, white-clothed, with clean
bare feet, one kneels at a shrine with a Buddha-statue, and bows first
three times, so that feet, hands, elbows, knees & head touch the floor.
Then, with joined palms at the heart, one recites these memorized lines
in a loud, calm & steady voice:

As long as this life lasts:
I hereby take refuge in the Buddha.
I hereby take refuge in the Dhamma.
I hereby take refuge in the Sangha.
I hereby seek shelter in the Buddha for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Dhamma for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Sangha for the 2nd time.
I hereby request protection from the Buddha for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Dhamma for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Sangha for the 3rd time.

I will hereby respect these Three Jewels the rest of my life!

I accept to respect & undertake these 5 training rules:
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Killing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Stealing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Sexual Abuse.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Dishonesty.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Alcohol & Drugs.

As long as this life lasts, I am thus protected by these 5 precepts...

Then, one keeps and protects these sacred vows better than one's
own eyes & children!, since they protect you & all other beings much
better than any army! They are the highest offer one can give in & to
this world! So is the start towards Nibbana: the Deathless Element!
This is the Noble Way to Peace, to Freedom, to Ease, to Happiness,
initiated by Morality, developed further by Dhamma-Study and
fulfilled by training of Meditation...

Today indeed is Pooya or Uposatha or observance day, where any lay
Buddhist normally keeps even the Eight Precepts from sunrise until the
next dawn... If any wish an official recognition by the Bhikkhu-Sangha,
they may simply forward the lines starting with "I hereby ..." signed with
name, date, town & country to me or join here. A public list of this new
quite rapidly growing global Saddhamma-Sangha is set up here!

Dhamma on Air #30: Right Speech and Stream Entry

Corresponding Video:

Discrete Consciousness =~ Discrete Space-time =~ Causal Sets

Dhamma Questions answered:

Question 85:
Venerable Sir, whenever I go I always hear rude and offensive language,
at home, at school, at the mall. Unfortunately this rude and offensive language
hangs on in my mind, and then my mind feels very dirty, bad, evil, and weak.
How not to think in offensive language although I do not say it verbally?

Question 86: I have read that Venerable Monks and Nuns are not allowed
to use or accept money, since that is against the monastic discipline they obey.
Please clarify this issue.

Question 87: What about when the Buddha foretold about King Pasenadis
dreams is that being a "fortune-teller" or dependent upon "astrology"
Is that right livelihood for a monastic?

Question 88:
I remembered that I forgot to pay $5 for locker hire at a previous high school.
I emailed the high school to pay back the $5 I promised to pay at the time.
They said "Thanks very much but you don’t need to pay."
Venerable Monk, would you call this situation a act of stealing?

Question 89:
How to advert one's attention to the non-local aspect of individual consciousness?

What is Advantageous?

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Thu Oct 20, 2016 8:54 pm

Friends:

Which Mental States are Advantageous?

Cut Short:
Mental states not mixed with any diluted form of Hate are Advantageous!
Mental states not mixed with any diluted form of Greed are Advantageous!
Mental states not mixed with any diluted form of Ignorance are Advantageous!

Image

In Detail:
At whatever moment any advantageous thinking pertaining to this sense sphere is
accompanied by gladness and associated with knowledge, directed to any sense object,
such as a visible form, a sound, a smell, a taste, a touch, or a mental object, then right
at that time arises momentarily: Contact, feeling, perception, intention, idea, directed
thought, sustained thinking, joy, happiness, one-pointedness of the mind, the ability of
faith, energy, awareness, concentration, understanding, the ability of mind and gladness,
the ability of vitality, right view, right motivation, right effort, right awareness, and
right concentration! There arise the powers of conviction, enthusiasm, acute awareness,
focused concentration, and understanding. There arise the powers of shame, of fear of
consequences of wrong action! There arises non-greed, non-hatred, non-confusion, and
non-possessiveness! There arises no ill will, but right view, shame and fear of wrongdoing!
There is then bodily calmness and serene tranquillity of mind. Then emerges then mental
and bodily readiness, facile mental and bodily adaptability, and rational rectitude of mind!
There is then present: Awareness, clear comprehension, mental tranquillity, insight, energy,
and non-distraction! These and whatever formless immaterial states these causally produce:
These are the -Advantageous- mental states...

Comments:
Diluted forms of Greed are: Desire, lust, yearning, longing, craving, hoping and wanting...
Diluted forms of Hate are: Anger, rage, irritation, resentment, opposition & stubbornness...
Diluted forms of Ignorance are: Confusion, uncertainty, doubt, perplexity and hesitation...

Evident, yet Subtle ..

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Mon Oct 24, 2016 9:13 pm

Friends:

Evident yet Subtle are the Facts of the Dhamma!

Image

Dependent origination becomes evident, when really seeing, and understanding:
When this exists, that also comes into being: The seed initiates the plant...
When this does not exist, that neither comes into being: No seed, no plant...
Wrong view of annihilation becomes evident, when seeing and understanding:
All causes are connected with their resulting effect. Nothing just appears!
Wrong view of eternity becomes evident, when seeing and understanding:
All states arise instantly as new phenomena. They were not there before...
The characteristic of no-self no-substance becomes evident, when understanding:
That all states have no core essence, and that their being depend on other conditions.
The characteristic of impermanence becomes evident, when understanding:
States arise and cease instantly. After having been, they do never ever exist again!
The characteristic of suffering becomes evident, when fully comprehending:
All liked phenomena come and go. Their inevitable loss is a recurring frustration.
When these subtle, yet crucial truths, all consequences of dependent origination,
has become evident to the Buddhist disciple, then all these constructed formations
appear to him as a stream perpetual terror: "So all these appearances, it seems,
not having ever been, come into existence, and then immediately cease, for never
ever to return... Nothing liked can therefore ever remain, or be kept as if owned...!"
Vism 632

Selfless is Harmless ..

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Thu Oct 27, 2016 8:24 pm

Friends:

What is the Deepest Bliss here?

Image

The blessed Buddha once said:
Solitude is happiness for the one who is content,
Who understands and clearly sees this Dhamma.
Harmlessness is happiness in all worlds,
Kindness towards all living beings.
Udana 10

View all in this world as Empty - Void of Core Substance -
Thus always Wide Open and Aware, Friend Mogharaja,
Giving up belief in all and any form of a "Ego or Self"!,
One may escape even Death, since Mara - the king of Death-
cannot see a Noble one with such subtle void, and empty view!
Sutta Nipata 1119

Blissful is solitude for one who is content, learned and who see this true Dhamma.
More blissful is harmlessness towards all sentient beings without exception.
Even more blissful is complete absence of craving for any sense pleasure.
Yet, the supreme bliss, is the elimination of this abysmal conceit “I am” ...

Devoured by Delight!

Postby Bhikkhu_Samahita » Fri Oct 28, 2016 9:43 pm

Friends:

Deceiving Sensuality: Empty of Happiness!

Image

The Blessed Buddha explained all the phenomena of existence as a pain:
Whoever delights in forms, feelings, perceptions, mental constructions,
and in whatever kind of consciousness, also delights in plain Suffering!
Whoever delights in Suffering, cannot ever be freed from Suffering...
I tell you: So is it really! SN 22:29

Delight is a Mixed and Camouflaged state!
Delight is Craving mixed with & covered by the happiness of satisfaction!
Craving is the cause of Suffering! (So indeed is the 2nd Noble Truth!)
Therefore is Delight also camouflaged suffering! Deadly is Delight!
Why so? Because it makes one seek back for more delight!
This seeking itself is, in the death-moment, the very cause of of rebirth!
When there is birth, there will also be death! Thus: Delight makes Death!
Beings are devoured by delight! Again and again! Decoy Delight!

INAPPROPRIATE
Why laugh? Why party?
Always is the world burning!
Why in darkness do you not seek light?
How can you find delight and laughter
Where there is burning without end?
In deepest darkness you are wrapped!
Why do you not seek for the light?
Dhammapada 146

Image

THE FRAGILE FRAME
See this painted puppet, one big mass of sores,
a diseased frame of skin drawn upon bones,
once possessing many evil thoughts, a thing much
regarded & beloved, yet of neither stable nor
lasting nature ...
Look at this puppet here, well rigged up,
A heap of many sores, piled up,
Diseased, and full of greediness,
Unstable, and impermanent!
Dhammapada 147

Image

ONLY A FORM
This body is worn out, a fragile form, a nest of disease,
a rotting mass of deception since its life surely, always,
and inevitably ends only in Death ...
Devoured by old age is this frame,
A prey to sickness, weak and frail;
To pieces breaks this putrid body,
All life must truly end in death!
Dhammapada 148

Image

Blissful is freedom from any sensual urge whatsoever!

Udana – Inspiration: II – 1

Comment:
Yes there is pleasure in the world. But it always goes away & turns into pain!
Taking delight means urging back here by rebirth and thus also more deaths!

All This - whatsoever - is Suffering: Such is the 1st Noble Truth:
