Friends:

Harmlessness is the Best Protection!

Image

The Blessed Buddha once said:
May all creatures, all living things,
all beings without any exception,
experience good happiness only!
May they not fall into any harm.
Anguttara Nikaya 4.67

Image

Solitude is happiness for one, who is content,
who has heard the Dhamma and clearly sees.
Non-violence is happiness in this world:
Harmlessness towards all living beings.
Udana 10

Image

The Noble is not one, who injures living beings.
The Noble is one, who never injures living beings.
Dhammapada 270

Image

Ever are the true disciples of the Buddha
well awake and quite aware. Constantly they
meditate both day and night on Harmlessness!
Dhammapada 296-301

Image

The one who has left all violence,
who never harms any being at all,
whether they are moving or still,
who neither kill, nor causes to kill,
such one, harmless, is a Holy One!
Dhammapada 405

https://What-Buddha-Said.net/drops/V/Ho ... ssness.htm
Few points here:

1) Thai monks were mostly silent when the Government they re represented by was contributing in one of the worst mass deaths in recent times: the 2003 invasion of Iraq. I consider ths as totally unwholesome and uncompassionate.
How can someone call himself as compassionate and then stay silent when hundreds of thousands of civilians are murdered in his name aswell, this is beyond me
I consider the death of a fly immensely less important than the death of a human being, still monks turned their faces away and did not help when thousands perished
How unwholesome!

2) the nonviolent principle proposed by Gandhi is sometimes misunderstood as cowardice
Not so!

After an exhaustive study of Mahatma Gandhi’s works, scholar and activist Norman Finkelstein has written a new book about the principles of nonviolent resistance from the Indian struggle for independence to Tahrir Square and Zuccotti Park. He says Gandhi found "nothing more despicable than cowardice," and argued that nonviolence does not mean running away from danger. In fact, Gandhi argued that fighting a war with weapons takes less courage than nonviolent resistance in which "you’re supposed to march into the line of fire, smilingly and cheerfully, and get yourself blown to bits."
https://www.democracynow.org/2012/6/5/p ... nd_courage

One can only argue that monks, who did not even took time and effort to just say "not in my name " when people were killed intheir name are not following the teaching of Gandhi, and, if the Buddha teachings were really about compassion, I strongly doubt they are following the teaching of the Buddha

Experiencing the Breath!

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita » Wed May 31, 2017 9:54 pm

Friends:

Special Experiences might cure illness instantly!

Image

Once when Venerable Girimananda was sick, the Buddha said to Ven. Ananda.
What is the experience of acute Awareness by in-&-out Breathing?
It is when a Bhikkhu, who have gone to the forest, or to the root of a tree,
or to an empty hut, sits down cross-legged, having straightened his body and
back, and set up awareness around the nostrils, then just plain aware of only
that itself, he breathes in, and then just solely aware of only that breathing
in itself, he then breathes out...
1: Breathing in-&-out long, he knows, notes & understands: I in-&-exhale long!
2: Breathing in short, he knows, notes & understands: I in-&-exhale short!
3: He trains thus: Experiencing this entire body, I will breathe in-&out!
4: He trains thus: Calming all bodily activity, I will breathe in-&out!
5: He trains thus: Experiencing enraptured joy, I will breathe in-&out!
6: He trains thus: Experiencing a happy pleasure, I will breathe in-&out!
7: He trains thus: Experiencing all mental activity, I will breathe in-&out!
8: He trains thus: Calming all mental activity, I will breathe in-&out!
9: He trains thus: Experiencing the present mood, I will breathe in-&out!
10: He trains thus: Elating & gladdening the mind, I will breathe in-&out!
11: He trains thus: Concentrating & focusing mind, I will breathe in-&out!
12: He trains thus: Releasing, & liberating the mind, I will breathe in-&out!
13: He trains thus: Considering impermanence, I will breathe in-&out!
14: He trains thus: Considering disillusion, I will breathe in-&out!
15: He trains thus: Considering ceasing, I will breathe in-&out!
16: He trains thus: Considering relinquishment, I will breathe in-&out!
Having learnt and memorized these 16 simple steps from the Blessed One,
the Venerable Ananda went to the Venerable Girimananda and recited these
to him. Then as soon as Venerable Girimananda heard these 16 simple steps
& the ten experiences his illness instantly subsided & he rose from his bed!
This was thus the way Venerable Girimananda was cured from his sickness....

If using breath people may be cured istantly, why even seniour monks go to hospitals to get cured?
And why average life expectancy in Sri Lanka is way way below Japan and Switzerland, where people do not know at all about buddhist meditation?

Because few - very few - practice this jewel consistently..
Other Karmic + environmental factors also interact.

Rejoicing Joy :-) _/\_

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita » Fri Jun 02, 2017 10:17 pm

Friends:

How to train Rejoicing Joy in others Success?

Image

When sitting alone, in silence, each early morning, with closed eyes one wishes:
May I radiate, and meet with only never-ending, and mutually rejoicing joy!
May I and all the various beings on the 31 levels of existence develop and find
only celebration, and elation in a never-ending mutual joy in other's well-being!
May I and all beings on the sense-desire, fine-material, and the formless plane
develop and encounter this generous, infinite, and mutually rejoicing joy!
May I and all beings in the front, to the right, the back, the left, and below as
above, develop, and experience open-hearted, sharing, and mutually rejoicing joy!
May I and all beings within this city, country, planet, and multi-verse always:
Be fully aware and deeply mindful of this content and mutually rejoicing joy!
Examine all details and aspects of this satisfied and mutually rejoicing joy!
Put enthusiastic effort in our praxis of this devoted mutually rejoicing joy!
Enjoy enraptured jubilant gladness in this exulting mutually rejoicing joy!
Be silenced by the tranquillity of quiet, and all smiling mutually rejoicing joy!
Be concentrated and absorbed into one-pointedness by genuine rejoicing joy!
Dwell in an imperturbable equanimity of pure, and mutually rejoicing joy...
Yeah! May it be even so, since mutual joy causes the jewel of contentment!

Mutual Joy Audio Dhamma-Talk: Rejoicing evaporates all Envy and Jealousy..
https://soundcloud.com/bhikkhu-samahita ... ontentment

Image

Crucial Comment: Mutual Joy is the 3rd infinite mental state (Appamañña):
This gradually reduces all envy, jealousy, possessiveness, stinginess, avarice,
miserliness, green covetousness, and any unhappiness related with all these states.
The cause of Mutual Joy is rejoicing in your child's or boon companion's success.
This same joy can then be beamed towards all liked, neutral and also hostile beings.
Mutual Joy is then the proximate cause of all satisfied and fulfilled Contentment...
Lack of mutual joy is thus the proximate cause of all dissatisfied discontentment...
Joined with the 7 links to Awakening it will later cause a formless jhana...
Be happy at all, and especially other being's success! Then calm comfort grows!

Moggallana was killed in a violent fashion even though he was an arahant and one of the chief disciples of the Buddha. Apparently even those with very good wholesome qualities (arahant, chief disciple, well-respected monk) might still have some distant past kamma ripening (according to the Theravada tradition).

The point was about health
The point was about why arhants go to hospital if using the breath can cure illnesses

The Blessed Buddha once said:

Sangahako mittakaro,
Vadaññu vitamaccharo,
Neta vineta anuneta,
Tadiso labhate yasam.

Friendly + Unselfish = Honourable!
Who is hospitable, and friendly,
Generous and unselfish,
A guide, a teacher, a leader,
Such one will to honour attain.

Today is Poson Poya day

Post by Bhikkhu_Samahita » Wed Jun 07, 2017 10:48 pm

Friends:

How to be a True Buddhist through Observance?

Image

This Poya-day is the full-moon of Poson (June), which is specially noteworthy to the Sri Lankan
Buddhists as the day on which Emperor Asoka's son, the Arahat Mahinda, officially
introduced Buddhism to the island in the 3rd century B.C. Accordingly, in addition to
the normal ritualistic observances undertaken on a Poya day, on Poson day devotees
flock to Mihintale & Anuradhapura, the ancient holy capital city of the country, for
it was there that Arahat Mahinda converted the then ruler, King Devanampiya Tissa,
and his court to Buddhism, thereby setting in motion a series of events that finally
made Sri Lanka the stronghold home of Theravada Buddhism.

On such Uposatha Observance days:
Any Lay Buddhist simply joins the Three Refuges and undertakes
the Five Precepts like this: Newly bathed, shaved, white-clothed,
with clean bare feet, one kneels at a shrine with a Buddha-statue,
and bows first three times, so that feet, hands, elbows, knees and
head touch the floor. Then, with joined palms in front of the heart,
one recite these memorized lines in a loud, calm & steady voice:

As long as this life lasts:
I hereby take refuge in the Buddha.
I hereby take refuge in the Dhamma.
I hereby take refuge in the Sangha.

I hereby seek shelter in the Buddha for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Dhamma for the 2nd time.
I hereby seek shelter in the Sangha for the 2nd time.

I hereby request protection from the Buddha for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Dhamma for the 3rd time.
I hereby request protection from the Sangha for the 3rd time.

I will hereby respect these Three Jewels the rest of my life!

I accept to respect & undertake these 5 training rules:
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Killing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Stealing.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Sexual Abuse.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Dishonesty.
I hereby accept the training rule of avoiding all Alcohol & Drugs.

As long as this life lasts, I am thus protected by these 5 precepts...

Image

Then, one keeps and protects these sacred vows better than one's own
eyes & children!, since they protect you & all other beings much better
than any army! They are the highest offer one can give in & to this world!
This is the very start on the path towards Nibbana -the Deathless Element-
This is the Noble Way to Peace, to Freedom, to Bliss, initiated by Morality,
developed further by Dhamma-Study and fulfilled by training of Meditation...

Today indeed is Pooya or Uposatha or observance day, where any lay Buddhist
normally keeps the Eight Precepts from sunrise until the next dawn...
If any wish an official recognition by the Bhikkhu-Sangha, they may simply
forward the lines starting with "I..." signed with name, date, town & country
to me or join here. A public list of this new Saddhamma-Sangha is here!

It should be the opposite
If Arhants could cure themselves using breathing, they should do just that and show the doubters that they can heal themselves
Why hide their own powers?
I can not see any reasons for that

Healing by breath contemplation does not occur in ALL cases even for Arahants.
What the text say that it DID INDEED happen for these specific cases.
Over-interpretation leads to wrong conclusions, and long-term ruin..
