Sucitto: Dhamma and Psychedelics

Post by Sam Vara »

An excellent discussion of a topic which crops up here, and in other Buddhist circles, from time to time. It might appeal to Westerners of a certain age, and of a certain background. (I doubt if I myself would have had anything to do with buddhism were it not for psychedelics...) I have heard Ajahn Sucitto talk on this topic on several occasions, and his approach is always balanced, subtle, and humane.

Good post, interesting article. I'm quite interested in this topic, having done things very similar to Ajahn Sucitto in my youth.
I downloaded an ebook "Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics" which has some quite excellent articles. Highly recommended.

when i dropped acid, i had such a miserable, frightening and death-aware experience that i wanted all my impurities to be cast away, that is when i seriously took up the precepts and
but that level of practice only lasted for a couple months because the ingrained effects wore off, and it's not that acid actually helped me awaken in any way; i had already had a latent tendency to practice, but i didn't feel a need to until i had this frightening experience. i remember meditating in the hospital best i knew how and that lessened the mental distortions. i also saw this terrible flame in my mind, like my mind was being burned
when you have a stressful experience, practice is your refuge. i seriously contest any relationship between the dhamma and a psychedelic drug. because that experience is not seeing reality as it is, that only comes from meditation. it looks like this might be what ajahn sucitto said, but it was kind of a long article for me
"Just as the ocean has a single taste — that of salt — in the same way, this Dhamma-Vinaya has a single taste: that of release."

i've done standard doses of lsd, dmt and shrooms a few times before learning the Dhamma. I guess it was useful to see that the world looks way differently when taking those drugs.
