Bollywood Buddha ZeeTV series

Post by Seven77 » Thu May 10, 2018 6:40 pm

Hi,

Does anyone here know how much of the Indian TV series "Buddha" on ZeeTV is in accordance with the Suttas?

Trying to find the rest of the episodes with English subtitles, but can only find episode 1 on YouTube:

It is supposedly on NetFlix, but think it must be the US version perhaps? Cannot find it when viewing NetFlix from Norway at least. Any tips on where to find it, legally off course, would be much appreciated.

I can get it on UK NetFlix. I can't say how close it is to the suttas having skimmed through the first episode. There were bits I recognised, but it didn't inspire me to throw away my Bhikkhu Bodhi translations just yet.

Of course! I bet the Puttamaṃsasutta presented a few challenges, though...

If you want singing and dancing then there's alway Prince Siddhartha the Musical...

The show toured New Zealand a year or so ago.

I thought this would be a cool way to watch the story of Buddhism, and five minutes in I had to stop :jumping:

But once the bird realizes that the cage is a cage,
It finds within that cage

I thought the bit near the end of the first episode where the baby Buddha-to-be took his first steps looked cool, though they left out the speaking:
‘As soon as he’s born, the being intent on awakening stands firm with his own feet on the ground. Facing north, he takes seven strides with a white parasol held above him, surveys all quarters, and makes this dramatic statement: “I am the foremost in the world! I am the eldest in the world! I am the best in the world! This is my last rebirth. Now there are no more future lives.”’

Sage Asita and his nephew Nardutta, the wise men who visited King Suddhodana and infant Gautama.

I liked it. It was a little slow moving in some parts, but that's because it was a series long program and that was just episode 1.

I like how it showed the Buddha's parents conceiving naturally, as opposed to the usual (previous) video life depictions which imply or suggest an almost immaculate conception with the elephant coming down from the heavens (Tusita) into Maha-Maya's body. For those not too familiar with Buddhism, the other depictions make it look like immaculate conception, whereas this one made it clear it was a natural-biological conception.
