Concerned for Samahita Thera

Post by JimmyM »

hello good people
for many years i have been on Samahita Thera's mailing list. To be honest, I havnt been reading them for a long time.
I have opened the last 2 and they are quite disturbing. They seem to be anti muslim rants but in a deranged way. Almost as if Samahita was ill or suffering some kind of mental breakdown.
I know he used to post here and wondered if anyone knew anything about his well being?

deep insight into the reality of dependent arising (paṭiccasamuppāda).
It seems someone hacked into his database.
I blocked Ven. Samahita from my email for a long time.
But I got one yesterday.

Why would you block him?
A dying man can only rely upon his wisdom, if he developed it. Wisdom is not dependent upon any phenomenon originated upon six senses. It is developed on the basis of the discernment of the same. That’s why when one’s senses start to wither and die, the knowledge of their nature remains unaffected. When there is no wisdom, there will be despair, in the face of death.

On May 5th he (or someone who hacked his account) posted what looks like an ad for anti-hacker software.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... GIS7C0xuSE

And then a few days later this strange post. Perhaps it's all for advertising that software (by a hacker)? Hopefully so, rather than his health taking a huge downturn.

He usually posts every couple of days or so and also on youtube, but so far nothing.

Has anyone tried to reach out to him? Are you able to reply to his emails? I'm not on his list so I don't receive them.

I'm not on the list as a subscriber either, but I've corresponded with him in the past. I sent him an email, no response yet.

An email came out this morning:
Dear Friends:
The situation here has been resolved peacefully
in the best possible way, and ‘I’ am safe and sound.

I have received another very brief email today saying...' the situation has been resolved in the best possible way'

I assume other people on the mailing list have too?

Hopefully he is OK and it was just a hacker?

Good to hear he's okay now, but curious what happened, but as long as he's okay, that's all good.

It all seems pretty weird to me.

Hi adosa, thank you for the information. Steroid hormones can certainly cause psychosis and mania. I have seen cases of this in patients with blood disease and other autoimmune diseases become manic, psychotic or paranoid when given steroids, usually more with high doses. The symptoms stop when the steroid is stopped. So maybe things are on the mend.

http://www.the-rheumatologist.org/artic ... sychosis/

Corticosteroids are used to treat inflammatory manifestations of many rheumatologic conditions. Doses necessary to control disease are frequently high (e.g., 1 mg/kg or greater), and therapy may be maintained for prolonged periods of weeks to months. In this setting, one out of every two to three patients prescribed steroids may develop psychiatric symptoms including psychosis, mania, delirium, and depression. The most common symptoms reported with corticosteroid therapy are hypomania, mania, and psychosis.

"Past psychiatric illness does not seem to be a risk factor for psychiatric side effects of corticosteroids"

I am glad he is okay and sent the update message. I was getting pretty worried...Hopefully he is able to recover quickly and end the steroid treatment.
