The Autistic Buddha

Post by Sam Vara »

Here is an interview with the author of a book called "The Autistic Buddha". I hadn't heard of it before.

http://quillette.com/2018/01/22/autisti ... interview/

It's basically an autobiographical account of a young man with Autism coming to terms with his condition, and, although not as interesting as I thought it might be (I was clearly hoping for a claim that Gotama himself owed his enlightenment to an as-yet undiagnosed autism!) there are some interesting and positive points about being helped by the Buddha's teachings.

"The Autistic Buddha", as a title for your thread, made me wonder. The Buddha's phenomenal teaching skills just do not make "autistic" a credible adjective.
Now that I know it was never meant to refer to Gotama, that's okay. The book looks positive and may help some people.

why were you hoping for a claim the buddha owed his enlightenment to autism

I wasn't really hoping for it - it's just that it would have made for a more sensational and controversial thread!
