Nature is stranger than we can imagine

Post by No_Mind »

I am starting a new thread and hope all of you contribute from time to time.

Anything about nature .. even cat videos (any except human nature).

In Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park you may find elephants walking through the lobby. This is because the lodge was unwittingly built on an old elephant trail leading to mango trees.

These wild elephants do not even glance at humans .. very strange because wild elephants are unusually aggressive animals.

The other side .. elephant in Bengal kills a man for no reason last Nov .. very violent animals. This is not a reserve forest but state highway through a forest.

That's not for no reason. The man provoked the elephant.

Actually no. He was trying to take a photo. He was a local and knew better than to provoke a wild elephant. He seemed to raise his hand and call out to the elephant though (for what reason no one can quite understand).

This is from account of others who were nearby and whose accounts were reported in media.

This one is funnier .. a motorcyclist in hurry tries to ride past a wild elephant at same place (different time) with disastrous results

No_Mind, these videos are amazing. What strikes me about them is that nature is indeed stranger than we can imagine - if by "nature" we mean human nature. The fact that these guys are risking certain death just to take a good picture, save their motorbike, or speed up their journey is utterly terrifying. I would take a long-range picture and then get out of there ASAP.

Why the man who was killed in the first video was waving to the elephant is not clear to anyone. But I can sympathize with those on the motorbike. Waiting an hour in the hot sun while the elephant finishes an afternoon snack can be tedious.

About human nature - in other countries when traffic light changes from green to amber before red it signals to oncoming motorists (upto 100 meters away) to slow down before coming to a stop at the signal .. in India motorists take the amber as an invitation to step on the pedal and tear through those 100 meters in the time it takes the amber to change to red (say 3 seconds).

Enjoyed the Elephants. Thanks for those postings.

Here's a link to a livestream of an Eagles nest, operated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The Eagles just returned to the nest today (Jan. 23).

Therein what are 'six (types of) disrespect'? One dwells without respect, without deference for the Teacher; one dwells without respect, without deference for the Teaching; one dwells without respect, without deference for the Order; one dwells without respect, without deference for the precepts; one dwells without respect, without deference for heedfulness; one dwells without respect, without deference for hospitality. These are six (types of) disrespect.

Being a closet Pagan, I love nature! Wind and waves and hills and trees and animals and skies and stars and such. Lovely! :woohoo:

Amazing phenomenon called sun dogs, when more than one sun seems to appear in the sky.

Spectacular example of one
