2018 World Cup

Any other World Cup fans here? I'm not a big fan of soccer/football, but I do watch the World Cup since it's only once every 4 years. Since almost every country competes, they start the qualifying matches to see who's in very shortly after the previous one ends. The big news so far is that the U.S. is out.

I think that world cup football is a great metaphor for the condition of humanity as a whole....corruption, gambling, prostitution, drug abuse, cheating, acting, rioting, nationalism, consumerism, PROFITS,.....its got it all!
I'm hoping there are lots of people here supporting the noble endeavors of the wonderful fifa organization.

US has never been a big soccer nation. Not surprised.

Since the U.S. is out, I'm rooting for (in this order):

1. Germany
2. Mexico (mi amigos al sur de la frontera)
3. England (hosts of Premier League and just because they love soccer so much, it'd be nice to see them finally win after so long)
4. Japan (is or more likely "was" a Buddhist country, as now it is mostly agnostic)
5. Morocco (I have a Moroccan dot MA domain name)

I like playing football more than watching it these days... I also don't own a TV! (Hooray!)

But I'll be rooting for England as I am an Anglophile, plus I live here!

Bulgaria was good in the '90s when Stoichkov and co were around, since then we've been poor. Our highest point was 4th place in 1994 in the USA.

Yeah, we dethroned the then reigning champions Germany to go into the semi-finals where the referee didn't allow us to win against Italy to go into the final. Nevertheless, 4th was a great achievement and Bulgarians went crazy partying on the streets. I was only 6 at the time. We had a great team full of talent with players playing for many major European clubs. Never to be repeated, I'm sure.

Do you mean about monks watching soccer?

At least it's only once in 4 years or it could just be following it online to see scores, not really watching. I'm no Vinaya expert, but a little diversion once in a while which doesn't transgress too much (occasional documentary watching, World Cup, world news, etc) can prevent some boredom, which is one of the big reasons some disrobe.

Romania didn't qualify. Our team is trash at the moment. The biggest surprise of this world cup is that Italy didn't qualify lol.

What is interesting is that Syria, despite all the war going on was close to qualifying lol. And they were also in a group with Iran, and Iran didn't let them win the matches against them despite having way more points than necessary to win the group. Iran could have sent them to the world cup but they didn't...

So in the absence of Romania and Italy, I'll be keeping sides with Serbia and also Iceland since they have a 250k population and managed to qualify. Iceland also was a huge surprise at the european championship.
