If you could meet the Buddha

Post by Ceisiwr »

If a time machine were invented and you could meet the Buddha one on one, face to face, yet were only able to ask him one question, what would you ask?
“Knowing that this body is just like foam,
understanding it has the nature of a mirage,
cutting off Māra’s flower-tipped arrows,
one should go beyond the King of Death’s sight.”

Which Buddhist tradition and teachers today are teaching the true Dhamma.

:namaste:
Liberation is the inevitable fruit of the path and is bound to blossom forth when there is steady and persistent practice. The only requirements for reaching the final goal are two: to start and to continue. If these requirements are met there is no doubt the goal will be attained. This is the Dhamma, the undeviating law.

I've been thinking about this for years. I don't have any questions anymore that I would ask the Buddha were I to meet him.

Interesting question. After some thought, I'm quite sure I would ask along the lines of this stock passage:
“Venerable sir, it would be good if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief, so that, having heard the Dhamma from the Blessed One, I might dwell alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent, and resolute.”
I can't think of a better power-up for practice than getting a custom meditation theme/object from the Buddha Himself!

I know that this might sound stupid, but i would not ask him a question, but question him on why he made his teachings available to everyone?

In a way, he left those who encountered his teachings with no excuses, making them in a way more responsible of their own suffering. One might argue that they are responsible anyway and that ignorance is not an excuse, but still, those who know and don't follow (who are the vast majority) in a sense are more blameworthy than those who did not know.
And the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Behold now, bhikkhus, I exhort you: All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!"

This was the last word of the Tathagata.

Probably not, so I'd ask him to dictate and then make his mark.

Which seems to be what pretty much happened anyway. We're back to relying on the scribes ...
