Head shaving

Post by Swatantra »

Hello friends :anjali:
Does anyone here, who is not ordained, shave their heads?
I do, and have done for a while but only recently for my spirituality. Even though I do not class myself a Buddhist, I am remained daily about my goal to be a better person and trying to follow the noble eightfold path. Plus I like having a shaved head! It is easy and I like how it looks (although I am VERY aware that this is not what shaving the head in Buddhism is about!).

What hairstyles do you have? Do you shave your head or do you want to?

One is truely washed of evil."

Hi Swatantra,

I'm female and I have my hair cut in a "bob" style, like this..........

....and no, I don't want to shave my head , it wouldn't make any difference to my "spirituality" or my Dhamma practice and people would probably think I had cancer .

Kind regards,

Aloka :anjali:

Luckily we have never had anyone confuse me for someone with cancer. I have quite dark hair though and I never wet shave it.

In my opinion, cutting your hair and donating it could be very good for your spiritual practice.

That's probably because it isn't at all unusual to see bald men, whereas its much rarer to see bald women, unless they're nuns in robes or women who have had cancer treatment.

I did not donate my hair because it was blue, although I would have done if my hair was its natural colour.. I did however shave it off (the first time) to raise money.

I am a young lady

It is becoming very popular for young women to shave their heads actually, I have seen a few of us around. I have had nothing but compliments from people, one lady in Sydney stopped me and told me I have a beautiful shaped head!
I shave it on number 1 and just let it grow 1cm or so before reshaving.

Oops, sorry! There are so few female members here that I tend to always think I'm talking to men! (and I live in the UK).

Haha, thats OK! I assume people on here are men unless it is obvious too. I am from the UK also, but I have not been back since I shaved my head. Im coming back in August and wonder what sort of reaction I shall receive!

I am a man, 21 years old. Yes I shave my head. The first time it was an attempt at 'renunciation' & motivated by knowledge that I had some pride in my hair...now I'm trying to grow it back but just a bit, I love the convenience of it as well.
Born, become, arisen – made, prepared, short-lived
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in

Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss

Do you buzz or wet shave?
I always get tempted to grow mine back but then it gets to that stage where I get tufts in the morning, so then it has to go!

My hair on top started thinning out around my mid-40s and then by the time I hit 50 it was mostly gone, so started shaving bald from that point. I wanted to go bald anyway, so don't mind shaving everyday. Nearly all men afaik don't lose their hair on the sides of the head and the back of the head (male-pattern-baldness) but I never liked that look, so shave it all off. I use an electric razor to start and then use wet razor to clean it up to the skin.

I am doing the same. Only I started losing hair in my mid-30s (hmph!). But I suppose I could get some Dhamma street cred by saying it is to emulate monks, right?
