hello, i am posting for a friend whose laptop isn't functioning. when you search 'music' on this site, you get hundreds of pages devoted to 'what music are you listening to', which in my opinion really doesn't have a place on a buddhist forum. i mean, yes most of us are laypeople but we come here to learn earnestly many of us. wouldn't it be more appropriate to have that kind of discussion outside the forum?
the issue is that one is hard pressed to find dhamma about music here without spending some time in spite of that thread

Re: delete the music thread
Greetings,
If your friend is that adamant to search for the subject of music without seeing that topic, there is functionality within the site's search function which can be used to include and exclude certain forums. Omitting the Lounge will omit the topic.
Alternatively, a google site search could be done which excludes all results with the phrase "what music are you listening to"
Metta,
Paul.

Re: delete the music thread
oh, that's very helpful. i'm still curious what purpose the topic serves
it'd be one thing to say 'how does the music you're listening to relate to the path' but it's a spam thread -- any of the music being shared is sensual and impassioned; one's goal should be dispassion

You should read this thread.
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=22044
Thing should be a sticky and recommended reading for new members. Might prevent some of the repeated posts about themes that crop up like clockwork.

Re: delete the music thread
it seems that that thread has zero to do with the topic at hand. no one is asking others to behave like monks. this forum was said to be cultivating knowledge of theravada buddhism, so how does 'what music are you listening to' or the lounge in general achieve that

Re: delete the music thread
it's overly casual and completely off-topic

Re: delete the music thread
Greetings
How is it off topic when the topic is "What music are you listening to?". It's an appropriate topic for the Lounge.
If you or anyone else doesn't want to see the Lounge, let me know and I'll revoke your access.
Metta,
Paul.

Re: delete the music thread
it's off-topic with regard to "Dhamma Wheel is an environment for the discussion of Theravada Buddhism." (from the terms of service)
"Any subject matter that may be off-topic... may be removed without notice"
it's as simple as that really.
you have missed the mark by offering to restrict my access to the lounge
no, i'm not personally offended or bothered; i think having a subforum that is inherently unrelated to buddhism may weaken the discourse

Re: delete the music thread
Greetings Sovatthika,
The lounge is for casual conversation. If it troubles you so much, by all means start a poll to see if there's support amongst members for burning down the lounge room.
Metta,
Paul.

Re: delete the music thread
To my knowledge, there aren't any rules about music which lay Buddhist practitioners have to follow....... but it's a spam thread -- any of the music being shared is sensual and impassioned; one's goal should be dispassion
How mean and extreme it would also be, if lay Buddhists refused to let their families listen to any music.
Perhaps you could activate your own compassion and goal of dispassion by ignoring the music thread and let others make their own choices?
Re: delete the music thread
That's ridiculous as far as having a lounge area is concerned. At most of the non- internet Buddhist centres/groups I've been to there's always been an area to sit and chat about life in general, and have a cup of tea or a soft drink.it's off-topic with regard to "Dhamma Wheel is an environment for the discussion of Theravada Buddhism."

Re: delete the music thread
The music thread is probably the only long thread on this forum that doesn't have people getting attached to views and arguing with each other about which is better, provoking, deriding, etc. etc. The music thread is positively wholesome in comparison.Sovatthika wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2017 9:41 am it's off-topic with regard to "Dhamma Wheel is an environment for the discussion of Theravada Buddhism." Re: delete the music thread
Yes, definately a lot calmer than some of the discussions ....and one's lack of any need for music will happen gradually through one's practice, rather than through it being forbidden to everyone.

Re: delete the music thread
politics also objectively kinda shouldn't be on this forum, but nowhere did i say music is prohibited for laypeople. would appreciate just a brief re-examination of the suggestions forwarded.
anyway, there's merit for the site founders, it was advice from a humble layfollower. it would seem that having casual (unrelated) topics is unnecessary to say the least. perhaps it is there to contain topics like that from spilling into other parts of the forum?
