Re: supernormal powers

This video reminded me of R111's experience with the leg-grabbing spirit. I make no claims of the veracity of the video!

Meditative Experiences of a Himalayan Yogi

The following is a descriptive article by Om Swami on the experiences he had, practising and meditating alone deep in the Himalayas. An excerpt: What happens when you churn milk? It turns into butter and once done, it never goes back to being milk. If milk can stay for a few days before going sour, ...

Re: supernormal powers

My "stories" did not depend on culture and setting but only my personal experiences. Only interpretations and one's subsequent analysis of the experiences will.

And about interpretations, there's this famous saying :quote: : "Make of it..."

First one is in India and second one in Thailand- though the location is not important.

SN 35.88: [courtesy: accesstoinsight] Note that this is for a monk and not a lay person. "Well then, Punna. Now that I have instructed you with a brief instruction, in which country are you going to live?" "Lord, there is a country called Sunaparanta. I am going to live there." &...

Re: supernormal powers

Continuing in the same train of experiences about seemingly supernormal ( not supernatural) powers: I know a guy who is a layman but he and his family are closely associated with many Buddhist teachers of high repute- Anagarika Munindraji, Bana Bhante, Dipa Ma etc. - his own grandfather established ...

Re: Do serious buddhist get bullied?

Buddha go bullied many times. From what I see it, he is quite assertive and never submissive. Dhamma doesn't teach us to be doormats. Goenkaji used to say that if you are in a tough situation with difficult people, use all your physical and verbal might to end the confrontation- but with a heart fu...

Re: Vibration and Vipassana

This is what Goenkaji had to say about vibrations: What are vibrations? How do they affect us? Everything in the Universe is vibrating. This is no theory, it is a fact. The entire Universe is nothing but vibrations. The good vibrations make us happy, the unwholesome vibrations cause misery. Vipassan...

Re: Vibration and Vippasana

At the time of the Enlightened one, we have read that Bhikkhu Meghiya could not practice properly because his mind was influenced by negative thoughts mainly due to vibration of a place where he meditated. Hi, could you please provide a reference for this? I read the Meghiya Sutta but it doesn't sa...

Re: Vipassana goenka doubts

Hi Brian, Welcome to DW and thanks for sharing your experience! It is indeed a conundrum to find out which technique suits one best. As far as Goenka/U Ba Khin techniques go, I have done a few retreats, so I will share my (limited) experience with you with the hope that you may find it helpful. My f...

Re: Documentary on Bodh Gaya

Hi Sarath, As David says, it is most likely true. However, it is probably NOT the structure which was found by Alexander Cunningham in 1883- the Chinese traveller Fa-Hien's account around 400 A.D does not mention any such large structure. The temple was rebuilt in layers and redesigned by many peopl...

Re: Critique of U Ba Khin/Goenka tradition by Christopher Titmuss

Thank you Bhante for pointing out that this has already been posted. I do apologise for the re-post; in my defence I searched for it but couldn't find anything. Anyway, I agree with what Bhante wrote on the other thread- parts of what Titmuss alleges is just not true; what is asked is not to practic...

Critique of U Ba Khin/Goenka tradition by Christopher Titmuss

Hi Dhamma friends, Chrsitopher Titmuss recently wrote an article about the fault lines and limitations of the Goenka tradition. I would like to hear your opinions on this. 10-day-goenka-courses-in-vipassana-time-to-make-changes-12-firm-proposals Excerpt: Goenka and the assistant teachers on the cour...
