Re: Question about vinaya
Is there a part of vinaya or vinaya commentary that suggests that one can't just get a deva to kill a being for him simply by attempting to ask them, without knowing certain rituals/mantras? hi Tom, To my knowledge the vinaya does not mention rituals/mantras in talking to deva's. However, the Devas...

Re: Question: Anagarikas
BTW it has been exactly 5 years this morning since I left the Anagarika Training. If you don't mind, why did you leave? Long story short I realised it wasn't the right environment for me to train in. whether it was the communal nature of a monastery, not holding the training properly, a combination...

Re: Question: Anagarikas
I'm aware of Anagarikas as being the "middle ground" between Layperson and Bhikku, and I do have one question: Are Anagarikas allowed to live outside monastery grounds in their own private residences, or must Anagarikas live on the Monastery grounds at all times? Thanks, CC An anagarika i...

Re: Are Parents Responsible for the Actions of their Children?
This BBC news item on Japanese parents apologising for the actions of their children raises some interesting questions about kamma and social responsibility. In the ultimate sense, of course, parents are not accountable for the actions of their children, but they do bear responsibility to some degr...

Re: Are Sutta instructions applicable for monks only?
Are Sutta instructions applicable for monks only? We have a habit of giving Sutta reference as an answer to an ordinary conversation. For example when a lay person charge for Dhamma teaching we quote a Sutta reference to say that according to Sutta it is not appropriate. I think when we handle lay ...

Re: Practicing the Four Foundations of Mindfulness
How do you practice the four foundations of mindfulness? All at once or one at a time? I'm thinking of practicing them one day at a time such as with Contemplation of the Body, Mon, Mindfulness of Breathing Tues, Postures of the Body Wed, Mindfulness with Clear Comprehension Thurs, Reflection on Re...

Re: Entrance to the vinaya Vol 2
Are you talking about the vinayamuka? If so only a couple of pieces are available online (regarding boundaries...) In truth Cittasanto Hi Cittasanto, the link for the vinayamukha vol.2 has been posted above. I have a physical copy of vol.1 but, for anyone who may want an online version, I'm sure it...

Re: Entrance to the vinaya Vol 2
I'm not sure if this is the right thread. But I'm really struggling to find this book. So far I haven't find an online version and after looking through book sites I still have no luck. There were some copies on amazon but were ridiculously priced (I think it was over $50). Any help would be much a...

Re: Do bhikkhus who justify abortion risk becoming parajika?
Hi.
Justifying abortion would possibly be praising abortion. However it would depend on when the justification happened (before an abortion would possibly be praising), and how it was being justified.
Without further information it would be hard to tell

Re: Helping someone with depression
My partner is currently quite severely depressed. I am trying my best to support her in whichever ways that I can, however it seems that in her state of mind most of my suggestions, and offers for help are rejected. It is hard for me to constantly be there to support her, yet deal with my own feeli...

Re: Ignorance changes, wisdom does not change?
Ignorance changes, wisdom does not change? I made up the above phrase. Do you agree with? If not how do you modify according to your understanding. The objective is to understand what wisdom and ignorance mean according to Buddhist teaching. I both agree and disagree with this. In some situations, ...

Re: Monks handling money?
It is only a minor offence. it is not a parajika. So they either have a reason that is allowable in accord with the vinaya or they just ignore the rule. It's all relative, of course, but even the elders at the First Council could not agree on which rules were to be included in the Lesser and Minor ...
