Re: What's the difference between Samadhi and Jhana?

thanks Anicca for your excellent description of Samadhi. I still wonder how many here has personally achieve it. If there are many here who can achieve Samadhi then I would know it's quite attainable unlike jhana where it's seem like an improbable task.

Re: "whoever is full of impurity ... remove him like rubbish"

Sounds harsh and all, but think of the abuse and corruption in the Catholic Church. Maybe its leaders would have done well to "remove the rubbish". Very good point Lazy_eye. Monks rely on the generosity of lay people to support them and a bad monk can jeopardize the integrity of the entire monastic...

Re: In search of a noble teacher.

The OP is looking for a 'Noble Teacher'...and good luck to him/her...although (my) reality compels me to say that all of the subsequent 'recommendations' will not give (what I consider to be) the desired outcome...the people mentioned give talks but not the personalized instruction that I get the f...

Re: Does the Abidhamma speak about the different realms?

Ah well... I wouldn't say that! Theres a couple of threads, Wind, regarding the inappropriateness of comparing this or that aspect of the Dhamma to quantum mechanics. A number of our members are mathematicians and physicists and they've put in some great contributions on the subject. kind regards B...

Re: Does the Abidhamma speak about the different realms?

Greetings, The author undertakes this survey before examining the types of process-freed consciousness because the external universe, according to the Abhidhamma, is an outer reflection of the internal cosmos of mind Does it? Really? What does that mean exactly? The way I'm reading it, it s...

Re: Does the Abidhamma speak about the different realms?

Actually, from page 185. Then on p. 188: Guide to 2 The compendium of process-freed consciousness opens with a rurvey of the topography of the phenomenal world, charting the planes of existence and the various realms within each plane. (See Table 5.1). The author undertakes this survey before exami...

Re: What's the difference between Samadhi and Jhana?

Since people tend to doubt those who says they achieve jhana, do people doubt those who says they achieve Samadhi? I would like to know if anyone here achieve Samadhi? If so, can you describe what's it like?

Hi Riverbend. You should watch a documentary on the lives of ants. Not only do ants have individual awareness but they also have compassion for their colony. A recent studies shows ants who contracted a terminal disease would choose to leave their colony so not to spread it to others and they die al...

Does the Abidhamma speak about the different realms?

I was wondering if the Abhidhamma spoke about how realms are constructed? If it's a actual plane of existence or mental construct... etc.. ?

Buddhists don't pray, although we give well wishes. It's not the same as christian prayers. The Buddha said if prayers works then everyone would have gotten what they wanted but we can see it's not reality.

So, I hope your father recovers soon. :console:

Another way to look at Sentience is in terms of realms of rebirth. The Buddha covers all the possible realms sentient beings can be reborn. So since sentient beings do not reborn as plants, plants are not sentient. There are no bacteria realm either that sentient beings reborn into. Bacteria in my o...
