Re: Vinaya reform

imho, different place have different consensus and different interpretation about vinaya. imho usually lay people like to see monks performing very strict vinaya. because they feel they support monks and nuns. lay people also feel that monks are their property. imho so, as a reaction to lay people ...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

I think that several recent posts have demonstrated that among modern philosopher/logicians there is considerable consternation around the construct called catuskoti or tetralemma. I think if one goes and reads what is available on line one will find that a lot of the conversation is concerned with ...

Re: Vinaya reform

Seems like when the buddha was near death he said that the vinaya could dispense with minor, insignificant rules but he never said which rules those were.....it is my understanding that there was a big discussion about what rules he was talking about and no consensus could be reached so they decided...

I've never heard of this.....can you bring a link to where this interpretation of DO is expressed?

Re: Going raftless

My main interest here is finding out why the Pali tradition doesn't like going raftless; whether anyone is practicing like that, what are their experiences, etc. From AN7.51 https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an07/an07.051.than.html#fnt-2 The uninstructed run-of-the-mill person doesn't dis...

Re: Wasnt Buddha a human ?

In this rendering of the sutta the buddha indicates that he (at the time of his speaking these words) is not those things and gives a detailed explanation of why. https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an04/an04.036.than.html On one occasion the Blessed One was traveling along the road between ...

Thanks for bringing this post. I'll make some comments about the part I bring below and perhaps I'll make comments about other parts later. Just found this topic of 2017: Based on the definitions for tetralemma and catuskoti found at wikipedia the sutta excerpt above does not qualify as being eithe...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

The wording does not restrict this instruction to just some of the undeclared issues so likely it is applicable to all undeclared issues. Before we continue, do we have a shared agreement that this restriction of matters to "the undeclareds" is correctly described as a "restriction o...

Re: Any real life examples these days of Tetralemma (Catuskoti) fourfold negation? What would be the fifth ('true') corn

Fourfold "negation" would be 1. not X 2. not not X 3. not both x and not x 4. not neither x nor not x "Four theses" are 1. X 2. not X 3. X and not X 4. neither X nor not X I think your formulation of the negation is confusing in that it uses double negatives. I think the idea is...

I’m not sure if this has come up already, but this seems relevant to the conversation: [Upasiva:] ........... ........... ............. ......... .......... [The Buddha:] One who has reached the end has no criterion [3] by which anyone would say that — for him it doesn't exist. When all phenomena a...
